3090 Gaming Coil Whine log

Did you guys find in use it reduced at all after a while?

tempted to send mine back within 14 days. Idea was it eventually will go under water in a HTPC, yet I can still hear the whine clearly about 3 meters away on the couch and this is with music and ambient noise from games with a atmos setup. Tried with couple of PSUs including my AX1600i which is extremely solid and still it whines so concerned this may not go away even after use. Will be thrashing it this weekend with watchdogs but doubt it will change anything. This is with LG OLED so can go up to 120hz at 4K, but whine happens at any FPS to be honest, all benchmarks I have tried thus far and some games.

I wouldn’t get too fixated on replacing cards. I’ve been through 20+ 1080Ti/2080Ti’s and nothing made much difference.

Play around with an undervolt is your best bet. Could get a 60% power reduction on my 2080Ti for just above 5% in total performance at 4k. Ampere could be similar.

You could also try blocking all your case vents especially the rear. You’d be suprised how much noise comes out the back of a GPU.

Your suggestions are solid for most indeed! that said I have also gone through dozens of GPU's while there is some variation to whine and still have 5 high end ones here still, there is none that have been as bad as this, more so when checked with some of the best PSU's around. When I can hear the whine from 3m away then its an issue, more so as plan is for a custom block to go onto it so rig will be silent.

Actually tested this in cases which have no rear or they are sealed up. That said, whine has improved smashing it stilly but still high and retailer agreed after sending video so going back next week for a refund and will grab a replacement.

If you can return it then always worth a shot. Hopefully the next one will be quieter.

But I’d agree audible at 3m is too much!

Let's hope it's only a small % that have bad coil whine. I've got a great 2080ti that nice and silent on a WB. The last thing i want to do is move to a 3090 and for it be loud. Another reason I guess for me to wait on these cards see how they perform.

3090 FE, have coil whine in all games. Probably going to try sending it back. It's a really annoying buzz, especially at night when playing a quieter game. Even tried undervolting it, still buzzes.

My whine did reduce significantly after about 30 hours, but was still noticeable at times. People saying they have no whine suggests I got unlucky and there are good samples out there without the whine so not going to live with it when it cost that much.

Do you reckon they can refuse if I've used the Call of Duty code ?

I used the watchdogs code and still sent it back. Of course that was not my intention at all from the onset but is what it is. Besides value is £0 on receipts so not sure what they could ask for in place of the code used.

Ok good to know. Yea I was holding out as people were saying the whine can get better over time, but if anything I think it's got worse over the week I've had it.

So... who's pumped for Cyberpunk 2077 on Thursday?
According to reviewers, raytracing is a complete bust with major performance drops, which of course doesnt surprise anyone.
Just find it funny that Nvidia sold us that the 3000-series would be an enjoyable RT-experience, and it was complete dog **** in Watch Dogs Legion for instance.

It's inevitable that this generation is going to whine more. It uses more power and the more power the more whine.

Me, and it sounds disappointing... Hopefully the gameplay makes up for it. (I'm avoiding reviews for now)

KFA2 3090, water cooled ... basically no coil whine (only ever so slightly with my head next to the card, not audible at any distance).

Just got my third 3090FE today. First one had loads of coil whine for it to not be normal, second one had broke HDMI port right out the box.

third time lucky! Very little whine now out the box and doing basic Overclock, holds a steady 2.1 GHz last three hours in at Valhalla without touching the voltage. Damm happy with this one.

What a relief, been a while for you.

yup! Am fortunate in that I have other GPUs so was happy to wait nearly 2 months from first one to get a real solid sample otherwise would have been a pain. But good to see there are some models that do not whine as much, that first one I had was awful!

Hi mate, yeah seems to be the GPU only, the PSU is dead quiet. Thinking about keeping the PSU and then RMA the Asus 3090 card.
Whats the cardboard bog roll trick you are mentioning? Not familiar with that... :)

Just because its the card making the noise doesn't mean the psu isn't involved, the only time I ever had it (howled like a banshee) it died down eventually but not entirely, replaced the psu (it died) and no problems with anything after that including my new 3090. Having said that if I forget to enable vsync/cap fps and it gets to silly levels i.e. 800+ every card I've ever owned will whine to some degree
