I'm liking the look of a tall back chair but don't like the mesh bit, is there anything similar that will be worth buying?

I also like a tall back chair and I had (still have, but don't use any more) a Markus. I was put off by the mesh back before buying it but found it completely fine in use. The arm rests were the only thing I didn't like, but I fixed that by adding some more padding over the right arm rest, where my elbow rests when I'm using my mouse. The tall back was a great advantage over average sizes, which don't allow me to lean back in the chair with support for my head. Or even my shoulders in some chairs. The Markus did me for years, but eventually the seat cushion collapsed and the head rest wore through/cracked/decayed/whatever. Fixable with a cushion and some gaffer tape, but I decided to treat myself to a new chair.

I replaced it with a Noblechairs Hero, which is very good but in a different price bracket (~£350) so not really like a Markus. But I think it's worth the money to me. It's more comfortable and will probably last even longer than the Markus did so it will probably be cheap over time.

Cheers for that, it really is just the mesh I don't like. Yea the Noblechair is just a bit too much for me, Couldn't justify spending that much well not at the moment.

I did exactly the same, had a Markus and eventually changed it for a Noblechairs Hero.

What don’t you like about the mesh? Is it just how it looks, the idea of sitting on mesh or the actual feel of it? In use, I didn’t think it felt any different to a non mesh chair.

I've got two Markus' , one for work, one at home..

I also was a bit meh about the idea of a mesh back, but actually it was perfectly fine, it's supportive and best of all breathable..

I'd agree with Angilion that the arm rests are the worse bit of the design since they are fixed and small, however I don't use them for anything (I rest my forearms on the desk).

When we got a load of Steelcase Leap task chairs I found them not as comfortable for me, I like the longer/taller supportive back on the Markus so have stuck with it. Both mine are 3+ years old and still look great and have not had any build issues at all.

still rocking a Markus here, see they are £179 on ikea now :O
I paid like a 100 for mine years and years ago.

surprised it's lasted so long tbh, the chair slowly sinks on some days though guess the compressed air cylinder thingy is buggered.

arm rests are useless indeed unless your in some weird posture leaning forwards with an arched back....

In my years sitting on a Markus, I only noticed a difference when it was particularly hot and I was lolling about in my underpants. The mesh does feel different to bare skin. But that's not a common thing and in any case it wasn't uncomfortable. Probably more comfortable than a solid back would have been in the heat.

I thought that cleaning mesh might be an issue, but the same cleaning I use on solid backs worked just fine. Backs of chairs don't get very dirty in most circumstances.

You should be able to replace the cylinder quite easily, so that's fixable. Just make sure that the replacement fits and is the same length. Or not, if you want the chair to go higher or not as high. Getting the current cylinder out of the base might take a bit of force, maybe some whacking it with a mallet, but it should be doable fairly easily.

£179 now...I think I paid £110 for mine. Somewhere around there.

Oh, forgot to say - I took the arms off my Markus because I just didn't like them and I've done the same with the Hero I have in the office to stop me from using them to push myself up because it aggravates my shoulder.

Two things the look of the mesh but I expect I would get used to it, but the feel of it, It gets hot in the summer in my room, So it's normally shirt off.

Seems though this is probably the best I'm going to get for now unless I want to spend some serious money.

Currently sat in the Markus, must say the mesh back was nice when it was hot in the summer. However my Tshirt stayed on, so can't say what it would be like on bare skin

the mesh is great for warmer weather, shirt or no shirt it's extra ventilation.

you can always drape a blanket over it if you dont like the feel.

Had a markus for years, can't say I've ever really noticed the mesh. It makes the back of the chair less bulky as well if you have limited space to manoeuvre (spin around in it :p )
