Keyboard modification request

I have a k120 and I recon I could 3d scan/print a top case and make the numpad disappear! Might need to rethink the folding of the membrane though as some of the membranes put keys into groups. Right im going to find the k120 in my garage, not for you but because im interested.

Seriously a ducky mini exists.

that would be amazing if you could do that mate, I would be happy to pay the 100+ plus the shipping fee mate if it’s possible

But why would you do this? I mean I would quite happily take on a project (I wouldn't take your money mind id just do it for the lols) but why do this to a meh keyboard? Also I went out to the garage and gave up after 30 seconds. I have a lot of junk out there and if memory serves me it's only 50/50 if the k120 ended up in there or the bin. But yea I am curious as to why?

I explained more thoroughly in the previous posts but it is due to a disability and this particular keyboard causing less pain than other types and models. I would happily pay for a new k120 to be delivered to your address if you think you can do it?

I just bought one. I make no promises but over the next few weeks ill give it a go. Technically I have all the tools, a 3d printer/scanner so if anybody is in with a chance...

You would need to reprint the case i think as ideally you want exactly that just without the numpad? And relocate the lights at the top of the keyboard. The bit that is tricky is pcb/membrane. Which I cant see as I haven't got one here to take apart.

thanks mate massively appreciated. Even Logitech didn’t seem to care so maybe you’ll be my saviour haha

Well it's interesting so im willing to give it a pop but i wouldn't stop looking on the fact that some noob like me said he will have a pop. Looking at the inside of the k120 you just know it's going to be a nightmare...

You can't be just folding that over, you might be able to trim and possibly run some wires to complete some circuits, but it depends on the groupings. You can have many keys on the same circuit. You are also going to have an extra bump at the top somewhere to locate the lights. It's no small task doing it "properly".

To add some complexity it also just so happens that the bit you want to "trim off" is also the part where the membranes interface the logic board :) You know it might not be entirely possibly by somebody as noob as me but I guess we will find out.

Check my reply to the comment above mate as I think it answers the same question as yours

like others in here, I do like these challenging projects especially if it has a really good goal like yours but I think the others with 3D printers etc would do a better job than I. I’d just be dremelling and bodging, relocating the LED bit in the top right with sticky foam etc, certainly wouldn’t be neat and sealed at the end! I’ll continue to ask some questions though in case it prompts more thought....

> Have you considered building (or buying if an off the shelf product exists) a simple elevated platform for your mouse to sit on over the top of the keyboard? This would be £10 max in wood and screws, your local timber yard would probably give you the bits for free.

> the way you describe the “feel” of the keyboard, it sounds like a mechanical keyboard based on a Cherry MX Speed switch may suit? Considered something like a Corsair K65 with MX Speed switches? It comes with an integrated wrist rest, looks “deep”

> you say you have given it a go yourself. What challenges did you face that someone trying to help would benefit from knowing.

As Vince has just posted, as suspected there’s an electrical problem here to contend with. I assumed there’d be some kind of rigid continuous PCB, looks like some flexible arrangement but in either case you’d need to maintain circuit integrity along with creating room somewhere to relocate the electronics in the top right.

I won't know until I have one here to put a multi meter on but It's very possible that the resistance per key within a group varies so that the board can work out what key in what group is sending a signal. If that's the case modifying the membrane could just be a total nightmare. I will be straight up im not 100% sure how membrane boards work and I know that some work differently to others.

For the sake of a few £ ive bought one to have a play with. If anyone else is up for it looks like this is the thread to share results on your k120 mod lol.
