3090 MSI Gaming X Trio high temps

I purchased the 3090 Gaming X Trio and the temps I'm getting are far higher than the benchmarks I've read or what I've read other people are getting with their cards. At full tilt on the stock fan profile the card hits in excess of 85c. I have tried different fan curves with MSI afterburner but this only lowered the temperatures to around 81-83c.

The case I'm using is Thermaltake the tower 900 and its probably not the best case for air flow however whilst I'm waiting for a block to be in stock I'm stuck to using this on air so I have removed all the glass panels from the case and placed two extra fans on the GPU side of the case for more airflow. This hasn't made any difference to the temperatures. In the same setup with all the glass panels on and just the two 140mm fans blowing air out of the case I had an Asus 1080ti Strix oc and this never reached higher than 74c in the same setup on air.

Even on the low temperature bios I'm still getting the same high temps. Anyone else have a similar issue with this card? I've even reapplied the thermal paste thinking the stock paste from the factory was dud and this made no difference.

The thermaltake tower 900 is really for water cooling, take off the front glass panel and see what the temps do then, there is only one exit fan at the top for the heat from the card. I have the same case. not enough airflow for air cooling.

^^ my thoughts exactly, that case is terrible for air cooling lol - you buy that case for one thing only and that's to build a massive custom loop in it

Yep, your case is a specialist watercooling case, the main airflow is at the back behind your motherboard on the side panels for 2 huge rads, factor in the fact your 3090 is probably taking around 300W and you have a cooker, pop the sides off and get a waterblock on it and in a loop if you're going to keep the case.
Other suggestion I can make to tame the heat is to undervolt, take it down to around 270W and hopefully you'll drop a good 5-10C

For reference for you, my 3090 Ventus runs 99% utilisation and caps at 80C (22C ambient), with the fans running at 70%-80%.

So yes, your airflow needs looking at.

Might be worth checking the exhaust vent on the card too. Some multi slot cards have exhaust ports partially blocked by slot dividers.

Just an observation but the AIB 3090’s seem to run considerably hotter than the 3090FE, even when not clocking higher.

That’s quite surprising TBH.

Depends what you're doing with it, short of 2 hrs of benchmarking on Timespy trying to beat Grim @2000mhz+ and pulling 420W I have yet to break 70C and my fans are capped at 70C

At stock my 3090FE appears to top out at 62C gaming, 67C benchmarking.

The OP and someone else have got 85C and 80C respectively, so you can see why I might jump to that conclusion.

Admittedly I’ve yet to OC or UV my GPU, but either way I can’t see the temp going up anywhere near those temps quoted above.

The 3090's as a whole feel very overengineered, but this is by far the most expensive gpu I have ever owned, and I won't be able to OC it properly until I get a waterblock. They do demand some serious airflow to eject the hot air they produce in a case though. But that's a side effect of the 370W power draw most have as standard. My stand in card from my 1060 was a 5700XT I purloined from a friend, at max OC it was barely breaking 260W at 2100mhz.

Yeah I tried this but temps remained the same.

Of course mate, the end game here is to put a GPU block on it. I already have a second reservoir ready and I'm waiting for another Aqua Computer pump but as there are no blocks available in stock yet I'm stuck on air, the card runs great it's just the temps reducing the clock speed of the GPU whenever it gets to 80c+. It does sound like my case airflow is the problem though so hopefully the card is Ok. I have tried the low temp bios which made no difference but if the case is creating any restriction in air flow then it wouldn't change much.

Thanks, i'll try this.

Considered the case before going for the default choice O11.
Case to blame, and until you fit the waterblock, don't see any way of improving temperatures, unless removing side panels.

Case was purchased months ago. I know the case hasn't got the greatest airflow but as per my original post my Asus Strix 1080ti on air with just the two 140mm fans and all the glass panels on the temps doesn't exceed 74c.

Maybe the 1080ti didnt get that hot but the 3090 GPU's suck 300w and more and they do run hot if they dont get enough cool air in the case. 1 exhaust fan isnt enough and that case is for water cooling.

Fair enough, I'll underclock it for now and wait until blocks are in stock for the card.
