With a R7 2700 and a RX 5700 XT, it's become impossible not to consider 'what if' I took a break from gaming and sold my GPU (or maybe even the CPU) for the near retail prices I paid for them over a year ago, with the expectation the thaw will break suddenly and I'll be picking up a Ryzen 5800X and RTX 3080 at retail for a super low upgrade cost overall.
I think the 1080 Ti is the thing in my recent memory that's demonstrated the opportunity of the 'big win' premium gaming experience that just lasts and lasts beyond its expected lifetime.
Compared with those who got the 1080 Ti, everyone who went for a 1080 or 1070 were sold short (unless they're 1080p60 gamers, of which I'm not sure any consideration need be given).
On the other hand, those who went for a 2080 Ti became meme material within two years, while the 1080 Ti early adopters have had a premium gaming experience for what, 4 years? And will likely forever be applauded for their shrewd choice of GPU.
Going by that, I think we all want the next 1080 Ti, and certainly to avoid the meme cards that the 2080 Tis have become, or even the 2060 or original 2070. And most of our bets would be on the 3080 being 'that' GPU.
