30xx Series Founders Edition

games apparently use max 4-6GB at the moment (up to 4k, not sure about 8k). GamersNexus point out that the vidmem allocation that tools report isn't actually what they use, many games pre-allocate much more than they need (they've done benchmarks to prove it). so 3070/3080 should be fine for some time. more VRAM is mainly useful for content creation (video editing, 3D rendering) computation etc.

I wonder which OEM makes/assembles the FE cards for Nvidia. they're probably shipped in the same batch as their AIB models.

Interesting you should say that.

Played the free COD game I got with my 3090FE last night. Maxed all settings @ 4K and used DLSS quality mode to ensure decent frame rates. After an hour I went back to the settings and changed the VRAM allowance setting to 90% and immediately the entire game and cut scenes were smoother. Looked afterwards and it used over 20Gb VRAM and ran much better for it.

Didn’t expect to find a game that would actually benefit from having 24Gb VRAM but apparently this one does.

Obviously, at 8K, 10GB of VRAM will easily be utilized in many games, I think this explains why the RTX 3090 performs significantly better than the RTX 3080 at 8k.

Let's be real though, the amount of people trying to play at 8K even with a 3090 or that even have the running gear for 8K is minute. That was literally a meme when they said it can play on 8K.

I've not watched one review of 3080s with their 10GB VRAM that they've been screaming out for more in games or even mentioned it as being a problem. Think people jump on the band wagon big time like it's crippling it's performance...

Did it use 20GB or allocate 20GB? At 1440p, everything maxed, RT on, DLSS quality, I can see it allocates 90%/9GB, but during gameplay the actual utilisation is less than that.

You say that but I bet if you were to run COD on two identical rigs next to each other but one with a 3090 and one with a 3080, tweaked the VRAM settings to allow more VRAM usage, then compared them, you would notice a visual difference. I admit I was surprised but it really did improve things.

I suspect on the 10Gb cards that there’s some compression technique at work to ensure smooth gameplay within the VRAM limitations.

I don't think it would matter to me enough to spend over double on a 3090 over a 3080 to play CoD.

Completely agree and that wasn’t a point I was trying to make. I was only mentioning it because I was surprised that it made any difference at all.

If anyone else on here has a 3090, please give it a go and see for yourself though.

Assets are loaded to the GPU decompressed; the CPU uses your RAM to decompress game assets and send them to the GPU for rendering, so the only real sign of insufficient VRAM would be something like stuttering where it can’t buffer enough for the environment. As you can imagine, having a decent CPU can also affect this.

Nvidia are launching RTX IO this year, which should have a positive effect on VRAM if you have the supporting hardware.

Interesting. I make no claim to know how any of it works TBH. :p

All I do know is that after changing that VRAM setting the entire game and cut scenes ran better for me. Could be a limitation of my 2700X for all I know, but there is definitely a difference.

If you have the VRAM then might as well use it :D I actually don’t understand why it’s even set to 80% by default; maybe to support 4-6GB cards better.

It's mainly people unable to get their hands on a 3080 therefore just convincing themselves that they don't want one anyway.

it's possible COD due to being a bundled game makes use of the VRAM as a showcase for the card it comes with. lots of unknown variables.
