I need to replace my aging system (Z97 i7 4790K) as it's really struggling with high bitrate 4k footage and premiere pro now :(

I don't have bags of cash at the moment, but I'm looking at a few AM4 boards with a view to being able to upgrade Ryzen processors (are they still the best bang for buck for multithread?!) further down the line.

The other thing is, what processor would I need to start with to at least match the performance of my trusty old i7?

I have around 5-600 to spend on the system to get me going, as stated I'd prefer to spend a bit more on future-proofing the mobo and slotting in a processor upgrade in the future. The only real nice to haves I can think of are 2x m.2 slots, also the more SATA ports the merrier.

A couple of boards I'm looking at, but I really could use some guidance lol;
ASUS Prime X570-Pro
ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F

I'm very happy with my ASUS Prime X570-Pro, bought in Jan 2021. 32GB 3200MHZ RAM and a 5600x cpu. Storage is 2x SAMSUNG 980 PRO.
My 8 year i7 is a toy in comparison. The stock cooler was replaced after a week with a Noctua NH-D15.
The airflow is great, the Samsung SW reports my M2 Storage at 24c, my cpu at idle is 32c, working hard, its never been above 60c

ATM..don't. Go intel + Z490 plus something like i5-10400f. Cheaper, same stats as Ryzen 3600 plus upgrade path. I have built 2 pcs recently with both platforms. Intel as usual was easier..my daily driver is a Ryzen btw. Boot time intel is much quicker too.

The quad core Ryzens are impossible to get right now, so I'd personally just buy a 3700X, 10700K or 5600X and be done with it. Should come in just over your budget with motherboard and 32GB of memory.

Ive just built another system. Last system was an X570 + 3600. The one im on now is B450 + 3600. Honestly i cant tell the difference.
