Can you support/suspend GPU in air, eg with cable ties?

Hey guys. Just wondering if you know if it's possible/dangerous to run a gpu whilst its suspended in the air (with cable ties, whilst using a riser cable)?

I'm guessing it might move left/right when moved or when fans ramp up?
I'm not talking about sag as this is a horizontal HTPC case, not a tower.
Case: Fractal Node 605.

Reason I'm considering:
-I'm doing a high airflow Node 605 mod, cutting 3 x 14cm fan holes in the lid and using the (stock) side fan holes for exhaust.
-Sold my (slim) 2080 4months ago, thinking I would get a 3080. Idiot.
-Gave up trying. Got a 1080.
-Turns out the height of my 1080 (an Evga FTW) is so tall (esp with the 2x8pin power) I can't even get the lid on: between the top of gpu and case lid there's 1cm clearance (14cm max, -13cm gpu height).
-Need to use riser cable, in a tight case not designed for this, so dont think its possible to support gpu horizontally from the rear hdmi/pci bracket slots.

TBH I expect the same issue even if I do find a 3080, almost ALL of them are massive, similar height. Besides, airflow will be much better without the gpu acting as a 'wall' separating the case into 2 compartments (see node 605 pics, it's tight).

**Top down / Birds eye view of Fractal Node 605:**
-riser cable goes from pciex16, under gpu, pcie velcro'd to psu.
-I'd be cable tying the 4 corners.

Wow well that pic thing didnt work :D
Basically, when flippping the gpu not sure how im gonna attach the rear end without cable ties as the slots are obviously usually vertical.

Do whatever, I don't forsee any issues as long as it is adequately supported with non conductive material. Cable ties, elastic, etc. And rig it so that the pressure on the card is evenly distributed if you can, just so that the fan shroud isn't pressed into the fans or anything like that. May or may not be a problem depending on the card.

yeah I dont forsee any issue, as long as the cables stay attached, just 0/s and 1's right? I also know it's not ideal though.

So you think i should pull it tight, so there is no movement?? yeah id be worried about too much weight on the shroud, its a FTW so pretty heavy... its screwed down though so should be ok

As long as it doesn't fall off from where it is. Tight, bit slack, whatever.

It is just 1's and 0's as you say, it wont care if its securely mounted in a case or dangled from a tree by a pair of tights as long as the connectors are fully seated and its got adequate airflow :D

Does the back bracket not provide earthing?
i.e. where you would normally attach gpu to case? :)
Haha oh god don't say that... Brings me back to my noobish days when I was scared to build pc without 10 different types of anti static gear. :D

Use code tag when you want formatting to be not touched by forum software.
(fourth button from right in toolbar)
Or just write it directly in BB code.
Code:
[ code ]
content you want to stay in
that formatting[ /code ]
Just don't do that spacebar between square brackets and BB tag name.

Also changing font to "monospaced" one like Courier New, whose every character takes as many pixels can help to keep formatting.

Leg-End. Cheers EsaT.

Over the years I have had a few GPUs in surreal positions: out of the case and hanging from the PCI riser, on top of mouse mats or books... they were all fine. That said, I was not paying for any of them :D

Hanging from the PCIe riser? wow... That makes me feel much more confident haha.

Cable ties at the ready, Dremel is coming out today as well. Going to drill a hole into my £200 psu to hold one end up as no place for cable tying. <eek>
