Do all House Insurance companies charge a set up fee?

I have spent half the evening doing that but quite frankly I'm getting fed up with the way insurance companies are ducking and diving looking for any means to screw their customers. When I first was involved in insuring a house, motorcycle or car I stuck with the same company for years but now it’s a game of cat and mouse and it stinks.

Unfortunately that's just how it is. I can pretty much guarantee that whoever your insurance is with through the broker will be much the same as any others.

It all comes down to how much you want to research in order to be happy with what you buy, or how much you just want it over with.

A broker is great if you don't want to put much effort into it and just want it over with. But you'll pay a premium (such as the setup fee) in order to get this done for you (bare in mind, I'd expect a broker to select underwriters based off their profits, rather than the best content/price combination for you)
If you're willing to do the research yourself into what each company offers you, customer reviews etc and choose one based off your research & the cost, you'll get something more tailored to your needs at normally a better price. - I always do my research & pick according to the cheapest that meets my needs. I've actually stuck with the same insurer since I moved into my current property 3 years ago as they come out as one of the cheapest available, and they seem far more pragmatic over DIY/renovation (some insurers seem to class plastering a wall as work they need to be notified about, and will effect the policy, my current insurer only wants to know about structural changes)

They've been doing that for years? I'm quite amazed how you've not even noticed!

I think most insurance policies (regardless of product) have an admin fee, but that's usually included in the price, and is normally something nominal like £10-25 rather than a huge set up fee.

look up who your policy is underwritten by (the insurer), and go direct to them. That way youll get like for like cover and will save the admin fee if you really want to stay with the same insurer and get exactly the same coverage as you have now.

However as others have pointed out its best to shop around, use a comparison site as you only enter the data once and it will check various insurers for you (however it wont include some not on those sites e.g. directline )

Alternatively approach the broker and ask them to see if they can get the price reduced etc

In addition to comparison sites it’s also worth checking with direct line and aviva who are not on comparison sites.

Direct line have been giving me very competitive renewal quotes in recent years too which also helps.
