Hi all

my dad is looking to upgrade his GPU in the coming months but is not sure what to go for, He currently has the MSI 1070 8gb and was looking at the 3060Ti... Would that be a good step to take or what would people recommend?

He mainly plays and tests Flight Sim at 1440p

I would go to OTT with budget but whatever the 3060Ti costs he's happy to pay :)

Cheers

Well that game uses a lot of VRAM but also heavy on CPU (even at 1440p but lesser than at 1080p) and the 3060Ti does have less VRAM than the 3060 (God know why as both are GDDR6 not more expensive GDDR6X on one so less of it due to cost) but then the same story for the higher models apart from 3090 (I feel bad for 3070/80 owners looking at 3060) lol.

What is his CPU and what clock?

Yeah I've not really looked into the 3000 series GPU's yet...

He has a 9600K overclocked in a MSI Tomahawk Z390 board

Not sure but as you know a lower number newer gen card can be same or faster than the older card, I think someone mentioned those two GPU's in another thread the other day.

The VRAM on both is my concern for longevity.

Oh yes! I went from a 1070 to 3080 and the difference is huge, but i play FS2020 at 4K... (it looks stunning)
At 1440 your old man will more than double framerate with a 3060ti, so it will go from juddery to super smooth.

Thanks both for the Info! I will let him know that it would be something to consider then

@turbot1984 I bet it does look great, Some images i see of that game is incredible

For what it's worth 2070 in xplane 11 Vulcan is 60fps for most part at 1440p
MSFS not so good, but a lot is optimisation

I'd say so. If you compared the 3060ti to the 10xx series cards, it's slightly faster than the 1080ti I believe. (So going from a 1070 to a tiny bit beyond a 1080ti performance wise)

The detail is amazing, just needs some serious hardware to see it at its best. Good luck with getting a 3060ti :D

Exactly what I said to him about stock of the new cards :p

It has some decent performance then... I just get lost looking :p like understanding a 3060 is faster than a 1070 but I suppose the newer gen stuff will be
