Running out of VRAM on RTX 3070?

I doubt you are running out of either VRAM or system RAM. SOTTR has some LOD issues which has been detailed in Youtube videos.

Are you using SSDs or HDs? What else do you have running in the background?
 
Coming from years of amd gpus and being probably the biggest IQ snob there is (see all my posts on how **** LCD is and superior oled is ;) :p :D), I was expecting to be fully dissatisfied going to nvidia but I have not noticed much, if any difference, there is a slight difference in gamma settings I feel but other than that, unless side by side and literally pixel peeping, I think what people notice is just placebo.

- both my amd and nvidia cards were set to the correct rgb setting etc.
- amd has image sharpening enabled by default, which does help clarity especially in games that use TAA, however, you can also enable sharpening with nvidia or/and redux

I wouldn't worry about it. It's just those who bought AMD this round experiencing buyer's remorse. Awful RT and no DLSS from what was supposed to be next gen, turned out to be a console card. If there was any difference then they would have posted the screen shots.

Its installed on a crucial 960gb sata 3 ssd, im uninstalling and reinstalling the game just in case. I was seeing constant 7.5gb usage at stock, and just applied a 121/991 overclock and the memory usage went down under 7gb. My fps only went up by 2 frames from 116 to 118fps, but thats because the 3900x is technically a bottleneck on this game.

I have opera browser running in the background. After looking into it I think its the LOD issues which I may never have noticed before, It might just be more noticeable because of the fps jump. I lowered the settings to high and it caught my eye even more, even though the gpu memory usage went down significantly.
 
I played on 5700 XT with also 8GB and never had any issues (beyond wishing I had a faster GPU).

Close everything down before gaming like it's 1999, each program uses a bit of VRAM.

Also set Windows to Best performance too can saved hundreds of MB in video memory for the OS. This was a must do when I had a 5700 XT.
 
Here is a 50 game 4k resolution VRAM test using that new MSI afterburner function that shows what the game is actually using.

The game tested are sorted by release year and cover 2012 to 2020

This is the average VRAM the games needed by year

2012: 1.2gb

2013: 2.8gb

2014: 4.0gb

2015: 4.3gb

2016: 5.8gb

2017: 6.2gb

2018: 5.6gb

2019: 6.8gb

2020: 7.7gb

It's still quite a small sample size given it covers 8 years but it does give some idea and it shows that game do need more VRAM each year that goes by and its starting to accelerate.

Also keep in mind that only 1 game was tested that counts as "next gen" and that was Cyberpunk which needs 9.3gb VRAM. So these games cover the entire last generation of gaming. Also worth noting, the test was done using an RTX3080 so there is potential that some newer games can reduce their own graphics to fit in the VRAM buffer (like horizon zero dawn does)

Just adding, PS4 and xbox one were released in 2013 and had the biggest percentage increase compared to the previous year.

Nice find. I think tech such as Microsoft's Direct IO and Nvidia's RTX IO will further reduce the constant increase in VRAM usage.
