Does anyone own a Briard?

He cried for about 10 minutes then went to sleep, he woke up a couple of times in the night but I checked him on the camera (thought it was best as his cage is under the stairs so didn't want to disturb him by coming down the stairs to check on him) and he was absolutely fine, he was pleased as punch this morning when we came down and he even pee'd and poo'd outside this morning, nothing overnight in his cage so we're over the moon with that

She has been brilliant bless her with explaining everything. She knows the last 5 generations have had good hips but like you say a bad one can pop up at any time.
We will do our best to protect them but ultimately he's a puppy! Yeah we've been told by several people about how they can do as they please so will certainly focus on getting a good routine with him. They also sound like they're happy to rise to the top of the pecking order if their human doesn't assert boundaries.
 
So this is what the breed of dog is called. Never heard of it, but recognise the looks of them. We have a cockapoo, quite needy and a little nuts.

Watch the pugs breathing, ours has been fine she's such a lovely thing.

Loves to hang off the other dogs tail though, such a playful thing she is. :)

Ah yeah I know Jan from dog shows years back, Gilcoru is a good line.


Trust me Briards will let you think you’re the boss but they actually are :D

well worth a read up on briard history, they were used a lot during the first and Second World War and were so good at what they did they were actually targeted. The main reason they weren’t wiped out is because the American soldiers saw how faithful they were they took them back to the states.

In regards to hip dysplasia if it’s mild it can be corrected through the right kind of exercise but my ones hips are really bad, I actually saw it in him from a few weeks after being born but being the stud owner I had first pick I couldn’t not pick him because I didn’t want him going somewhere where it wasn’t managed.

Oh, and if you’ve been told they mature after 2 years and calm down it’s all liessss :D they mature about 4 years old.

Be prepared to be stopped lots when you take him to beaches and stuff (once we can do that again).
 
Yeah not heard anything bad about the Gilcoru dogs. To be honest, we want a family dog that jumps on the sofa, and wants to play fight etc but I am cautious to make sure he knows where the lines are and that when we say down, he goes.
The war stories are crazy really. Big powerful dogs though, likely rugged as hell before the days of people worrying about their hips. I had not heard of people correcting the hips before they get bad, that's reassuring to know though.

I have no expectations of him maturing any time soon, we relish the thought of him being a little boisterous and characterful. Within reason!
The inlaws have a beach hut near Cleethorpes where we expect to be spending large amounts of time on the seafront, this is part of the concern for his hips whilst young, we can't do much with covid around except stroll around, but we're told he can't do that for more than a few minutes at a time.

yeah they were and are extremely loyal dogs.

with regards to hip dyplasia give me a shout if you have any concerns when you get him but to be honest Gilcoru will be hot on that and also congenital stationary night blindness.

I am extremely happy for amount of mayhem you are letting into your lives :D

Eyes are clear, think hips scores for both parents were 11 on sire and single figures for dam. Like you say though can still throw up a googly.
 
He looks so sad/worried!
Good plan on getting him comfortable travelling.

We have a courier sorted now, all ready for a Saturday PM drop off. Got 2 beds, and a load of food turning up some point this week. Already got a load of chews, treats, blankets, bowls etc so I think we're set.
Breeder has suggested a hot water bottle in his cage for the first few nights, he'll be missing the warmth of his siblings and mum so it helps them settle apparently. I guess you didn't use one?
 
RE: hot water bottle we read the same so have one for him, another site also recommended a ticking clock as it simulated the beating of a heart (like his mothers) but we didn’t bother with that.
1st night he murmured and whinged a little bit but settled after 10 mins, woke up murmuring a bit more but not much so we were ok to leave him.
2nd night he was in real distress when we put him in the crate, I came down and let him out and lay on me on the settee, he settled and I put him back in his crate and laid with him until he fell asleep, he woke up after an hour and got upset so I came back down and laid with him but didn’t let him out of the crate and he eventually went back to sleep
Last night I had to get back up and lay without taking him out of the crate until he settled and went to sleep, he woke a couple of times murmuring but settled without any further intervention.

We have put a couple of T-shirt’s of ours in his crate and I’m also pleased to say the last couple of days he’s wee’d and poo’d outside when we’ve taken him, when he’s done that we make a massive fuss and give him a little treat hoping he knows he’s done good.

Colchester, those are good scores.

With Gilcoru they will be able to spot bad hips it straight away, with regards to diet they will more than likely give you a diet pack on what they have been feeding the pup and what to feed them for the next 6 months. When do you get him and did you go black or thorn ?
 
The ticking clock I thought was for very young, separated at birth kinda pups? Yeah not sure we'll bother with that though.
I have watched a load of YouTube stuff about staying with them until they sleep etc, asked the breeder and she said to avoid all of that, they'll come to expect it. So I'm torn, I know she is old school but I trust her techniques and we will go the route she says I think. Or at least try it. Hopefully he settles well.
Good work on the quick successes so far with potty training!

She is sending him with a blanket they've been snuggled in, and a toy he's been playing with along with some food.
Also, a pleasant surprise, received an email from Purina, breeders referral so I get 30% off my first order. Will get a big order in to make the most of that. Just trying to estimate how much puppy kibble he'll need, she says to feed him on the medium puppy for 12 months.

We've gone fawn (or thorn?) We get him Saturday afternoon, I'm at work till 6pm though so maybe the Mrs will have him settled.
 
Not a big dog, OP, but we got our working cocker spaniel pup at the beginning of December.

She really wasn't a fan of the kibble that came with her so we tried a few others and she wasn't a fan. We've since decided to try raw food and she's been loving it and always eats her meals.

We're going to try some of these online food places but we've been buying puppy raw food nuggets from Pets at Home (I'll find the brand if interested) along with a fruit and vegetable nugget and she really seems to be getting along with it. Her poos have been much nicer since we switched her to it
