Hi there, itching to get a bit of an upgrade on my system as I'd like some better performance in some of the games I play. Not sure on what I should target first though.

Specs are:

CPU: Ryzen 1700
GPU: GTX 1080
RAM: 16GB 3000mhz
Motherboard: AB350 Gaming-3
PSU: XFX 550W.

I play at 1440p. Budget is anything up to £750 really.

Thanks.

CPU and motherboard because the others are either ok, Memory etc and you can buy a new GPU at the moment unless you can spend 6-8 hrs watching the web.

More chance of getting a new CPU even a 3xxx series one if you cant get a 5xxx series one.
Possibly new PSU too 750-850w if you have money left over.

I think that's probably the best way to go about it actually. Which CPU would you recommend as well as motherboard?

AMD CPUs have a lower TDP than their Intel counterparts at the moment, so you can get away with less power on a PSU, but as stated, 750W+ is a good start from a good brand.

I have been running an older 550W Corsair PSU, which is fine for now, but if I upgrade to an Intel CPU and an NVIDIA video card, I will need 800W+.

The Asus tuf doesnt support your old cpu and you will will need to flssh the bios for the 5000 series Cpu to work. Some motherboard have a bios flashback feature which Allows you to update the motherboard without a cpu the asus doesnt.

The msi tomahawk does have bios flashback.

The 5600x should be good enough unless you want those extra 2 cores.

So whatever motherboard I get with the Ryzen 5 series I'll need to flash the motherboard?

Thanks for the advice guys. Is it worth paying the extra for a 5800x over a 5600x or not do you think?

Two caveats with the 5800x - the 2 extra cores, might not be utilised for gaming for at least two years or more, it also doesn't come with a cooler, the 5600x does come with a Wraith cooler, so you'll be saving some money going with the 6 core/12 thread 5600x.

Some motherboards incorporate a USB BIOS flash to support newer CPUs but you'll have to load the USB with the software which means needing access to another laptop/computer.
