So, about that Mercedes slippy-slidey video then...

You drive like a granddad

Doesn't bother me - seen too many incidents first hand to not drive with a good degree of caution generally - though I will sometimes impose myself to force other people to give me good space to work in. Plus I'm driving a larger vehicle - over 2 tons of pickup sometimes with a fair bit of weight in the back is a good idea to drive like a grandad.

I'd advocate everyone to drive just a little more cautiously and give everyone else just a little more space - we'd probably cut road fatalities immensely - I see very few accidents that had to happen.

Ah, even worse, a defensive driving granddad. Lemme guess, you drive a Barbarian and/or a Discovery? :D

Navara (V6 Outlaw).

When you've seen what I've seen you'd probably drive pretty defensively as well :|

(Amongst other things when I was a kid we caught up with traffic here that was behind one of those big horseboxes when it slowed to let a vehicle out from the left just as a motorcyclist pulled out and peeled down the outside to pass the traffic - never stood a chance other vehicle came around the horsebox coming the other way at the same moment as he was passing it - motorcyclist instantly decapitated in the crash)

Don't think we know how much grip the merc had could have had all season tyres,
car tracks indicated other drivers had gone around the smart, so merc driver is somewhat vindicated staying on correct side of road.

!!!! no way, that doesnt vindicate at all and you only have to watch the other video to see why.

Would be interesting to see the state the tyres were in - seen so many people struggling (or even crashing) lately (maybe COVID situation is making it worse) and then you see they have basically no tread on their tyres.

The Smart car driver seems to have pulled over at the top of a hill and parked due to the conditions. The person filming even comments that she shouldn't risk moving. But she should have parked a little further forward or onto the pavement to allow cars to pass more safely.

The VW was on the wrong side of the road as the only option to get past the Smart car safely.

The Merc came from behind, undertook the VW at a speed not suitable for the conditions and was a bell end.

This is how I saw it.

Your standard garden variety berk in a Merc.

It's just an accident really, isn't it? A load of cars probably all on summer tyres, the drivers of which may have made slight errors of judgement in approach speed / stopping distance / choice of parking spot. While I'd be sad if someone crashed into my car in that situation, I wouldn't be running around screaming and shouting at everybody - it's just one of those things which can happen if you have to drive in those conditions.

Depends - Merc driver definitely looked like he hastened at ~5 seconds in with the intention of getting ahead of the VW - though that is somewhat an interpretation - but no reason otherwise for the sudden change in speed on the flat bit just before the hill.

EDIT: Certainly under no delusions as to my own driving ability and totally aware that when you hit ice it can be game over no matter your approach or skill - but as I mentioned came through a bit of road the other day, taking a bit of caution, fine on summer tyres albeit driving a pickup, when over half a dozen drivers came off the road on the same stretch just after me causing the police to close the road.

Still haven't got to properly test these tyres on snow sadly - they did OK with what was on our drive way - but definitely putting all seasons on at some point none the less - I've been fortunate the last few days so far I've not had to deal with the worst of it to see how they truly perform.

The idiots here are the ones out with their phones willing an accident to happen instead of being proactive and warning people it's not passable. It's lucky pedestrians weren't caught up in it.

Nobody in this situation read it right nor cared about anyone but themselves which is apparently becoming typical of people.

Was thinking that earlier - though some people are worried about getting in trouble for taking action if something happened. When I was a kid on roads like that the residents would be out there dumping sand or grit/salt if available, etc. and warning drivers, etc. these days it is someone else's problem.

Quite possibly, although there is nothing from the video that looks like shockingly bad driving to me, just the kind of minor misjudgments you see every day, made more serious by the conditions.

I once drove an XJ6 all around the alps on summer tyres during snow season, had a lot of "moments" but never hit anything. Whether that was luck or skill, I couldn't possibly say :p

Regardless of parking or road positioning, none of that would have happened if the Merc driver hadn't desperately tried to get ahead like so many aggressive drivers nowadays.

100% the merc approaching the hill too fast and not reading the road ahead, everything else is a result of that, the smart was obviously visible easily enough hence the vw going the other side to avoid any issues with it.

This.

When you hit a parked car as the Smart was, it can't be anything but your fault. If the car is parked so badly that you can't get through, then don't go through.

No winter tyres. No-one in that video should have been out without winter tyres. All the traction aids and gearbox programming in modern German cars expect you to have winter tyres on in the winter because they're a legal requirement in most countries. Without winter tyres (and especially on the wide big block summer tyres we love so much) a lot of powerful cars these days are just lethal on any kind of snowy or icy road.

There's a good question actually. Should those filming be held liable (assuming they're adults) for not taking action to prevent/warn oncoming drivers and/or should they have an obligation to phone the police/etc if they knew the road conditions are likely to lead to an accident? Difficult to enforce I guess though.

Definitely the Merc driver at fault IMO though. (Excessive speed in the conditions, lack of awareness of the driver in the VW's reason for crossing the road and trying to overtake on the inside when it was clearly unsafe to do so).

The traction aids on the Tiguan is pretty happy on summer tyres in the winter - though different league with all-seasons on (never tried with winters).
