I recently installed a new USB Knightsbridge fast charge.

Apart from the current issue where my backbox is a little bit too tight (address with some spacers to help levitate this problem) I have acquired a USB C tester to see the power draw and its not quite right to me. Is there something wrong?
My phone I'm using to test is a Huawei P20 Pro mate

Have I got my electrical wiring mixed up for this to draw so little power? If its working correctly I will want to replace a few selected power sockets with the fast charge and if for whatever reason my house electrics isn't suited for it I might as well forget it

doubt it's a wiring issue.

Out of the box, p20's only supported quick charging using their own super chargers. They didnt support QC3/4 OR USB-PD. There was talk about later firmwares enabling QC3 support on the p20pro but i don't know if that went ahead or not. You've got about the worst phone for supporting charging standards, there :p

It's almost certainly this. My Oneplus 7 pro only charges at it's Warp rate if using their charger AND their cable. Switching to even a high quality 3rd party cable drops it down to standard charging due to a missing something in the cable.

Im no pro on this but I can try things and make sense but using my Ankey fast charge, its USB output but plugged in the electrical tester into the USB C port on the phone does give me slightly different voltage but its not designed that way to read electrics that way?

I would test the cable with the original charger first to confirm it's able to deliver at whatever amps it's supposed to pump out at.

I would then also try another USBC device to see if it at least goes above the 0.5amp that it's currently pulling.

How charged is your phone as well? I may be completely wrong here, but i thought the quick charging only occurred at low capacity - i.e. if your phones on 70% then it wouldn't do quick charge.

I dont have other newer tech that has USB C to check if it quick charges.

My phone right now is currently at 95% so it could be a factor when its charging.

I have a Dell u3419 that PD off the USB C but would that be a similar test when comparing it to my outlet usb charger from the wall?

From the product page you linked:

Please also note that it is the phone that decides how much power it is going to draw from the socket and once a phone gets over around 80% charge it reduces its charging sequence. FASTCHARGE mode will not kick in if your phone is at more than 80% charge.

Unlikely to be anything to do with the socket, certainly nothing to do with house wiring. Try other phones, xbox controllers etc, anything else that charges through USB.

There also a chance that the measuring device doesn't pass the quick charge handshaking through to the other side

ML Accessories, the maker of 'Knightsbridge' often manufactures diabolical products as anyone who fitted their "Pure" range will surely attest (nearly 80% failure rate for accessories within two years).
It's quite possible it's old tech without proper handshakes or charger runs hot inside small backbox and limits power output.

You can check the charge rate directly on your phone with Ampere - it will take about 30s to settle once you start it.

With my OnePlus and the official dash charger + cable I can get 3A. With a third party cable (a short USB C Anker - so good quality) it only charges around 1A. There's a resistor in the end of the cable or something to let the charger/phone negotiate a higher speed.

Annoyingly my cable broke a few weeks ago :(

Just a side note, if you are doing a lot of these then just buy a mains socket wiring tester. You can get one for £5 and they tell you immediately if you have wired the socket incorrectly. Also valuable when you are about to remove an old socket since they will warn you if it is still live. For the HUGE sum of £10 you can even get one that gives you a voltage readout of the mains at that socket.

Something like this?

In my OP, the reason I question my own wiring, is that I notice at the back of 'modern' plugs are 2 grounding points. I only used 1 however the wiring in the back of that socket had 3. I wans't sure if i needed to make contact with both grounding points on the back or can I just get away with one?

This is why I love ocuk. I didn't even know ampere existed or that I would even care but now I'm working my way round our chargers to see what charge speed I'm getting.

My xaomi redmi 8 Pro seems to get 1.7amps regardless of the plug or cable type. I have no idea if this is good or bad but I like knowing it.
