I can’t see me ever getting into PC gaming again but would like a better monitor for home office use, movies and a little design work.

I was looking at 27” ips screens but then veered towards a 34” UW. With a max budget of £400, less if I can, what should I look at? I was semi avoiding 4K as I thought it would be too small at those sizes? My eyes aren’t what they used to be so thought 1440p would be a decent resolution?

it will be used for both my work day on a laptop and a desktop for home use.

4K 27” with 150% scaling will give you effectively 1440p but text and UI will be much sharper. Your eyes will thank you. You can also watch 4K movies natively.

Have a look at the LG 27UL650.

ok, I didn’t consider scaling and taking advantage of the higher res.

High DPI displays are great for making things easier on the eyes. This is why phones look super crispy, kindles have over 300dpi to give text that printed look and why people (like me) only use Macs with Retina displays. I've personally used many resolutions and 27" 4K scaled 150% to look like 2550x1440 is a massive improvement over 1440p.
