First of all hi!.. i'm new to the gaming PC world, and have been reluctantly thrust into it by my 15yr old son ... He has a PC already, but says "it isnt good enough" (first world problems eh?)

Happy to upgrade whatever it needs to get some peace.... but thought i would run it by the hive mind first .. i'm pretty handy at electronics and happy to install

Many thanks in advance

Hi

In my opinion if hes wants to play modern games then your computer is done and the only thing you could reuse is the gtx 970, Maybe the psu depending on make and age and case.

Yup. No way to sugarcoat it really. He happens to be right even though it's a 'first world' problem. Some games these days are bigger than 64GB which is the total system storage, apparently. That could easily be remedied but unfortunately the CPU will really hold it back in modern games. A newer CPU would squeeze more performance out of the GTX 970 at 1080p res, and then will also handle a GPU upgrade when the GPU situation improves (and your wallet allows). And new CPU means new motherboard and new RAM (2x8GB would be fine). His current system has done well to remain alive so long.

Just to note.. the 64GB was meant to say 64bit... the HDD is 4TB (7200 rpm) and the system is running on a 512GB SSD... however i'm beginning to see that with a few upgrades we might be in business.. thanks hive mind....

Thanks everyone.. as a punt, do you recon that a new CPU and motherboard should bring it back into the modern age? worth chucking a few hundred quid at or raid his savings and add the few hundred quid to a new PC?

Depending on the motherboard you maybe able to upgrade to a 6 core Xeon X5650 which costs around £8 second hand and these overclock easily to 4ghz then you could just focus on a GPU upgrade although these are scarce right now but a gtx 1070 / 1660 super would be a decent upgrade if you could find one for a reasonable price.

I was running a 1070ti with an overclocked Xeon @1440p and moving to a modern ryzen 5 3600 I gained hardly any extra fps in games.

@Joxeon @turbot1984 im thinking that a cpu motherboard and memory upgrade is going yo be at least 20% boost in fps . The rx 580 is approx 15 to 20% fsster than the GTX 970 so it makes sense to upgrade the cpu.
The trouble is spending £700 for a 15~20% fps isn't really worth it. You could spend another £400 and get a prebuilt with a 3070 that would give 120% more fps.

A prebuilt is probably the best way to get a system together fast without playing hunt the graphics card as those get GPU supply priority.

Slightly under budget but you could always ask them to swap out the psu "which is normally a cheap kolink model" for something a bit better quality.
