Advice needed regarding GPUs and PSUs

Greetings,

Unfortunately I am unable to post this in the mining forum as it says I have insufficient privileges to post!

Current hardware setup

1) PC#1 - Budget gaming PC - online used for some gaming, mostly 3D modelling and nightly mining
  • ASUS H310M-A R2.0 motherboard
  • GTX1660 6GB SUPER GPU
  • 500W PSU
2) PC#2 - Spare PC (Dell VOSTRO 470) - offline at the moment

The following items are arriving today:

1x MSI - GeForce RTX 3090 24 GB SUPRIM X
1 x Asus GeForce RTX 3070 8GB ROG STRIX OC
1 x GOLDEN FIELD GPG 80+ Gold 850W PC Power Supply Unit, Fully Modular

My plan is as follows:

  1. Remove current PSU and GPU from PC#1 and replace with new 3090 GPU and 850W PSU
  2. Install GTX1660 6GB SUPER GPU in PC#2
So far so good... BUT here is where I'm not entirely sure. Where to place the new 3070

Can someone please advise what are my best options please?

Apologies in advance for my n00bie questions and thank you for taking the time to read and hopefully help out with my queries.

Welcome to the forums.

OK, having briefly researched that PSU I would be VERY wary of connecting anything as valuable as a 3090/3070 to it. I can't find any load chart/what internals it has and the websites I can use for that brand don't have that model. Plus it also labels some of the outputs as IDE/SATA. Given that IDE hasn't been around for quite a while, I would be concerned this is based on an old PSU design that can't support a very heavy draw on the 12V rails or that it contains cheap/nasty internals.

Something like this would be a much safer bet:

The PSU is one of the most fundamental components and it is not a good idea to skimp on it. When a PSU fails, it can take other hardware with it.

Oh my goodness. Thanks for this information. In terms of PSU wattage is there one you'd recommend that's 1000W +

Any ideas on Aerocool Strike-X 1100 Watt 80+ GOLD Semi Modular PSU or another recommendation for one that's more than the 850W that's actually being delivered this afternoon.

I think you really need to talk to mining folk.
I know nothing about mining, but you certainly need to check the maximum power consumption of the cards. Also, I know nothing about using multiple power supplies, but if you have already bought one power supply I would just consider buying a second rather than a single high wattage power supply. Just a thought.

Your motherboard only has one PCIe slot doesn't it? Perhaps you could make this a lot simpler by just using the 3090, so you don't need more power, you don't need a new motherboard, and you can cancel or sell other graphics cards? There are people who would give their right arm to get hold of that 3070.

It won't let me post in the mining section for some reason. I'm sorry I realise this really isn't the place for my questions.

At this moment my active PC will not be able to handle the new 3090 as it only has a 500W PSU which is no good.

I'm going to to keep the new GPUs in their boxes and rethink this whole thing again. Would be nice if I can get into the relevant forum section to discuss my options.

I like your idea of 2 X PSU instead of one. Presumably this will requite an additional piece if hardware/wiring to connect multiple PSUs but that's for another discussion.

Thanks for your input.

I think on multiple PSU builds that you just use it to power the additional GPU’s after the first so it doesn’t actually need to connect to the motherboard or any other internals (the first PSU powers these + the 1st GPU) you just need enough mains sockets to power them (I’ve hear it’s dangerous to put lots of PSU’s on a single outlet using an extension).

I’d echo what the others have said around that PSU, looks a little sketchy to me. Also larger “w’s” isn’t necessarily what you need, you have to consider power draw per lane and that the more you push a single PSU the harder it’s working (more heat to manage) which could be detrimental to it’s longevity.

Thanks all.

I will be returning the dodgy PSU.

Have just placed an order for 850W Corsair RMx Series RM850x, Full Modular, 80PLUS Gold, SLI/CrossFire, Single Rail, 70.8A, 135mm Fan, ATX PSU 6T433
