You haven't supplied all the information required. What is the refresh rate of the monitor?

If you're gaming at high refresh then the CPU will not keep pace with the GPU. If you're gaming at 60hz then the CPU will cope fine, however the GPU will barely break sweat. The 3080 is not a card for 1080p 60Hz.

No matter what refresh rate you're intending to game with, your hardware will be mismatched.

All of this. Monitor is most likely 60Hz, in which case the CPU would cope as you say. But nobody in their right mind buys a 3080 to game at 60Hz. And if it was more, the CPU would struggle to push the monitor to reach those higher refresh rates.

OP, if you buy a 3080 now, if you then can't upgrade the rest of the system for quite a while, there may be a successor to the 3080 on the horizon. All while you're running it with this system not getting your money's worth out of it.

If you were running at 1440p or 4k high refresh, that's a different matter.

oh i see but my monitor is 165hz its fine or not ?

i only play rocket league, fortnite, cod warzone, boc4, aion and csgo

I went from a 1080TI FTW3 to a 3080 just for ray tracing and DLSS. It's been a fantastic upgrade at 1440p/60Hz even though the rest of my system is an old Ivy Bridge 3770k based setup.

That said, I don't know what you will gain from DLSS at 1080p.

Probably best not to give people poor advice.
A 3070 would also have been a "fantastic upgrade" and performed similar to your bottlenecked 3080.

also dont waste your money on a 3080 if you are only going to be gaming in 1080p get either a rtxx 3060ti 0r 3060 (when it comes out) or the rtx 3070

That's massive overkill for 1080p, I can't imagine there's much your 1080 is struggling with. Still, I wouldn't worry about the bottleneck and just buy what you can afford, since if you keep your monitors this long the 3080 will last you 10 years.

It will be fine for 165hz 1080p on a 6700. Yes a faster CPU would be a better match but from what you play at 165hz it will be a very noticeable upgrade on the 1080. It's not a waste of money as you'll see massive fps gains although you would have course see greater improvement in games you don't actually play at a higher resolution if you had a faster CPU. It's really not overkill as you can never have a GPU that's too fast especially not on a 165hz monitor.

Pretty bonkers to buy a 3080 for only 1080p gaming but each to their own. But, the key thing is, you can always upgrade your display, cpu, Motherboard etc at a later date, IF YOU WANT TO.

I’ve recently got a 3090 in my current x99 intel 5930k at 4.4ghz rig to see how it does. Key facts though - I game at 4K 60hz and ultra wide 3440x1440 up to 100hz. I’m an image quality, single payer kind of fella over super high FPS multiplayer *****. I’ve had high hz monitors in the past, and I genuinely don’t care about over 100hz now.

For the games I’m interested in, and for my displays at the image quality I want, especially with ray tracing support taking off, the 3090 is still mostly the limiting factor with a 5 year old intel 5930k x99 rig.
