Whilst clearing the loft I found some old newspapers lining some boxes and one article caught my eye. It was from the Kilburn Times dated 1982 and it made me smile.
PULL YOUR SOCKS UP, CONSTABLE!
Police chiefs at Hendon training college have told the Metropolitan Police’s new recruits to pull up their socks...literally!
It seems that the new fashion craze for men to wear ‘trainer socks’ has found it’s way into the police force - and bosses are less than impressed.
A number of the Met’s finest young officers have been found displaying - or rather, not displaying - their new-style socks and senior officers have decided to clamp down on the trend.
A source from Hendon said, “Not only do these trainer socks look unprofessional on a uniformed officer, in all honesty, they look ridiculous too. A couple of constables were pulled up because it looked as if they weren’t wearing any socks at all.”
It looks like, “pull your socks up, lad” is taking on a slightly different meaning for the newly qualified police officers!
How times change, eh? I suspect they’ve got bigger fish to fry nowadays.
