Which Motherboard - AMD Ryzen

Hi All,

I'm currently doing some research with a view to building a Ryzen PC. I see that Ryzen 3, 5 and 7 all use the same AM4 socket. Is it realistic to get a motherboard that will support all three chips? I'm just thinking ahead and possible upgrade possibilities. Spec wise for the mobo i would like it feature rich. Plenty of USB3 ports. Maybe two NVME slots. I've always gone MSI previously but i won't discount other brands if it fits the bill. Many thanks in advance.

This will happily take you from a 3100 or 3600 now, to a 5800 in the future. The x570 boards are really what you want when it comes to lots of features (at a cost), but the B450 board is much cheaper and many will take you up to Zen 3, though not ideal with Ryzen 7/9 CPUs.

there is no upgrade path .. after x570 .. so get the best you can or wait till next yr .. when the new boards and chips come out ..

This is really helpful. Thanks very much. I was looking at a B550 ASUS board but will check X570 as well. I don't want to spend thousands but i've got a flexible budget. I'm going to fit all this into Coolermaster Stryker SE. It's only the Mobo, CPU and Ram that's getting upgraded and everything else is in my signature.

The x570 elite board is a excellent board also have a look at
Msi x570 tomahawk and msi unify

unless you need to .. why not wait 6-8 months your system should hold you till then ..and buy the new stuff with an upgrade path that will last a few yrs at least .. ?

No guarantees the AM5 platform will last or be available in that time to be fair. But would make sense i'd agree. Looking at current Zen 3 prices they're kind of steep. Going Zen 2 then 3 later on is my preference due to cost saving. Guess it depends how much OP wants to sink into a motherboard.

Max cost saving would be a compatible B450 now, and then Zen 3 later on. The picture above doesn't say b450 supports 5000 zen 3 series but some boards have bios updates available for it due to a U turn by AMD. But the board will no longer work with previous gens after the update, not that that should be issue imo.

I never go chasing the new stuff nowadays. I do a lot of work in Photoshop/Lightroom and various photography apps. These have started slowing down a little, hence the upgrade.

I'm going to go either B550 or X570 and drop in a Ryzen 5 3600. My friend has one of these and seems a decent upgrade from what i've got currently.

Ive just dropped a 3600 into a MSI Tomahowk Max B450 in my new build.

Id previously had a X570 board, also with a 3600 but felt spending £200 on a board this time was overkill. The 450 board has all i need. So far ive noticed zero difference.

It's a novel situation to be in if i'm honest. I've been Intel years now and just got used to changing my mobo when i do a CPU upgrade. The fact AMD have used the same socket is a bit of a coup for me.

The price difference between a B550 and something like the X570 Tomahawk is marginal. The X570 unify is also a great option as someone else suggested. If I could buy another board I think I'd go for an MSI this time round. Gigabyte's software is a right pain to use

So it's a tossup between these two.

Skipping MSI this time and switching to ASUS. Quite a big difference in price and trrying to figure what the biggest differences are.
The asus chipset fan on x570 are placed poorly on board right under graphic card id stay clear of that board personally

Has anyone bought the Rog Strix x570-i from overclockers lately? Does their current in stock batch come ryzen 5000 series ready? Don't have another pc or ryzen to flash the older bios unfortunately.

never bothered with msi in the past, but this idea is interesting. needs two 8-pin EPS power connectors, my cables are two lots of 8 pin from the psu and 2x 4 pin plugs to the motherboard
