Hello guys, I come with bad news and really need some guidance.

I am a complete novice pc builder and I just built my own micro atx build with the following specs:

MSI Ryzen B450M MORTAR MAX AM4 mATX Motherboard

Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200MHz C16 Memory Kit

Samsung 860 Evo 1TB SSD

Fractal Design Define Mini C Tempered Glass

AMD - Ryzen 5 3600 Processor

CORSAIR - TX550M Semi-Modular ATX PSU - 550 W

RX 570 GPU (bought used)

Problem:

The computer has been running perfectly fine for 2 days, I stress tested the GPU and was fine, I played some games they were all good, temperatures all seemed fine, the whole setup was working so well and I was quite proud.

Tonight I was playing Total War Warhammer 2 and the sequence of events was as follows:

My screen suddenly turned off
A second later my tower turned off

I now can't turn the PC back on, the GPU light is still on when the PSU is on but the mobo light is not on. There is also a sound that happens when I try to turn the PSU on, see this in the video.

Here is a video showing what is happening.

Clicking would be a relay noise. Whether it's the relay making the correct noise I wouldn't know.

I'd start with double checking your cables. Both power cables from the psu to the motherboard and the wire from the case power button to the motherboard header. Stuff happens, maybe they're not connected now.

Ok so I removed the gpu I bought (which by all accounts was working perfectly up to this point), removed my PCIE wifi adapter, and removed Sata cables for my SSD and tried a bare bones start.

And now the system is turning on as normal, fans are all turning on and lights are all on.

What does this mean?

Did you have any kind of overclock? I would run everything at default settings in BIOS and try booting with the GPU in place. There must be a reset CMOS jumper. Do this and try booting.

I haven't done any overclocking, I used GPU stress test at 1080p and no problems to report there.

So you think I should now reconnect the GPU and try to boot up the pc and enter the MSI bios then change everything to default settings? Will this wipe my windows 10?

So a recap:

After doing a bare bones start (unplugged GPU, PCIE wifi, and SSD) as kindly suggested by @Jacozeelie , the good thing is that everything turned on after that.

Now I went to plug my GPU back in, and the problem comes back again and nothing turns on. Does this simply mean the GPU is defective? It is so weird because everything worked for 2 days, I was playing games with this GPU no problem, now this.

Do you have a second computer to double check components?

Do you have another slot to try the gpu in?

Might be cramped but there's another slot the gpu could be functionally tested in.

I switched to a different GPU and now the system works fine, so it seems this used GPU is a piece of crap. IS there any way of fixing it? Or just hope this guy refunds me.

I have two slots I can use for the GPU, haven't tried the second one, but I just tested the PC with a different model GPU and it all starts up fine.

You could check the card for signs of damage. Double check it slots in fine and power connectors are ok. Depending on the actual model you could see if there's a dual bios switch to try.

Wouldn't take it apart if you're considering chasing a refund. Even if you do it's unlikely anything you'll find is home fixable but you might find why it's not working.

Is this common? I played several games on this video card for two days and now it just completely doesn't work and stops my PC from turning on. I find this really bizarre with no warning or anything, I just know that even if I get a refund for this GPU I now have to re enter the GPU rat race of hell which is going on right now. So disappointing.

There are no visible signs of damage on the GPU, my eye is very untrained but it looks fine.

It's not common for a gpu to be working for 2 days and then stop but sometimes people do things like heat up a faulty gpu to get it working again for a short time. https://youtu.be/sSZ7X2vQO_k?t=694

That sounds shady, but doesn't explain that the seller is perfectly willing to meet and refund me the price of the card. Why would he be willing to refund if he heated up the GPU?

The only thing I can think of is the graphics card short circuited or something.

Lots of ways GPUs die but mostly they die because they're a whole computer on one board, power circuits, memory, processor, it's all soldered together and then it spends its life being the hottest part of a PC.

Eventually the heat gets to it, any part of the many components or the magnifying glass level soldering fails and the entire board has to be binned. At best a GPU will start displaying a flaky image before it snuffs it. At worst it might let out the magic smoke while still inside your pc. You can't tell how long a GPU will last, you can just try to keep the heat down and hope.

Anyway, see if you can test it somewhere else just in case and if it's stuffed for sure tell the seller it dropped dead after a couple of days and you did nothing beside plug it in.

Thanks for your input, I suspect my power supply won't turn the system on as a protection measure against this GPU? Is there any risk that I connect this GPU to my brothers PC to test it and is does any damage? Obviously don't want this to happen!

It is a micro atx motherboard, it seems I have only one PCIE slot for this mobo with graphics cards. But I did try mu brothers Nvidia graphics card and my pc turned on okay no problem.

The board you listed has two full size PCIE slots, other one is right at the bottom above all the audio and usb and button headers.

But seeing as it's already causing something weird, and another card does work in the top slot, and your seller appears to be offering a refund? I'd take the refund and get back to looking for another card without risking any more working hardware.
