Which is best for gaming? DisplayPort or HDMI?

Reading on Google says that DisplayPort is best, but I don't really understand why. Could somebody explain please?

I am looking to buy a monitor but want to buy the right cable first time round

Also, is there a way of finding out the current HDMI speed/version a monitor is using to the Nvidia graphic card? I understand that there are various HDMI versions, so I am trying to find out if my friend could use a better HDMI cable or even a DisplayPort one.

Displayport is the choice for professionals and for total dummies. That is what you need to buy.

HDMI for monitors is good but not as dummy proof.
 
It's DisplayPort.

HDMI is a 90s standard that is only still around today because it's the standard connector on televisions, it's basically a slimmer DVI connector with the ability to carry analogue removed. DP on the other hand is a more modern connector designed to replace DVI in the IT space. Because of the prevalence of HDMI in the TV space it's received numerous updates over the years but it's still not on par with DP.

Actually HDMI 2.1 is superior to Display port 1.4

No GPUs have Displayport 2.0, sadly.
 
HDMI 2.1 > Displayport 1.4 > HDMI 2.0

So really it depends which version of these connections you have, HDMI 2.1 is currently the best there is, however its very new so very few monitors have it
 
Wikipedia covers this nicely. But chances are when you upgrade your GPU and monitor things will be different again. HDMI 2.1 monitors are still hard to get untill later this year, so it's not worth getting hung up on if you want to upgrade now.
 
Check what cables and connections the monitor comes with before you buy any cables, eg my Samsung monitor came with a DP cable and one DP port so no point in buying a DP cable. Personally I use HDMI as it doesn't cause problems unlike DP for me, but it does mean that my monitor runs at a max. refresh of 120 on HDMI v max of 144mhz on DP
 
I bought a replacement DP cable for my monitor one time to rule out some problems I was having. Well, there must be some crappy DP cables on the market as I when I plugged it in it was making all sorts of noises and didn't work with the monitor at all. Anyone else come across this before?
 
Also some have problems with DP, (me), where after a while the pc or monitor won't recognise the cable. Apparently you have to power down, unplug all cables for 5 minutes in the hope that it works again. I've gone back to HDMI
 
Plenty of searches of Google, quite often they first say a few seconds but when you read replies that doesn't work and minutes does. Seems a crap solution really, shouldn't have to disconnect anything in the first place, it should just work, so HDMI it is

oh so even if I have a gpu with a hdmi 2.1 the monitor has to have that connection also? - didnt think of that.
So if I have/get a gpu with a hdmi 2.1 but my monitor only has dp 1.4 and hdmi 2.0 I should go with the dp?

Gsync generally only works with DP (there are some exceptions) & Freesync works with HDMI so the brand & model of GPU is also a factor.

ahhh good to know, my current monitor is freesync but supposedly nividia gpus support it (all except my current 970gtx), if I remember correctly it needs a err 1070+ series?
I forgot about freesync now.

Nvidia compatibility with Freesync can be hit and miss. Just to confuse matters, the Nvidia card would require DP for Gsync but HDMI for Freesync.

Whilst the best cable In terms of specification is currently HDMI 2.1 it really does depend on the specific hardware being used - some monitors actually require a specific quality of HDMI 2.1 cable for best compatibility. I'd say to anyone that if they are in any doubt then post the details here and someone will help. :)
 
HDMI for me.
I had random 2 seconds black screen problem for ages using Displayport, tried differnet cables / options but none work.
I changed it to HDMI and everything works perfectly.
