I've been given the chance to get a hot tub at a knock down price. Now its not something I've thought about but I do enjoy using them with the better half when we go away. Has anyone got experience of install and upkeep on these and are they worth while?

Is it new or used?

If used make sure all the pumps and the air blower work. Check for missing jet covers and head rests, they're replaceable but costs can add up. Check the shell for blistering/cracking. Factor in the cost of new filter cartridge(s).

Regardless if its new or used, expect anything from £30 to £100 a month running costs depending on how often you plan to use it. Most require a 32a supply so factor in costs of getting a suitable supply to it from your DB. Chemical upkeep is fairly simple but I'd recommend a comparator or photometer for testing it rather than using test strips. I presume it will come with a folding foam hard cover? If not you'll need one. It's also beneficial to use a floating cover as well, as they will prolong the life of the hard cover.

It's one of those things where if you aren't planning on using daily or at least 3 times a week don't bother.

Then your exposing yourself to all sorts of chemicals, etc which are required to stop it from killing you. 4 kids died from one it was in the news last year or before.

Personally I'd rather just get a large whirlpool jacuzzi type bath for the main bathroom.

You get all the pros with none of the cons that way.

Ive just purchased a new hot tub, just been in it for the first time actually.
Been thinking about getting one for years, so due to covid we decided on a hot tub insted of the holidays this year.

Thanks for all the responses.

Just a few notes I have found out.

It comes with 14 months warranty remaining. Only bought last year.

All in working order and comes with steps and lid etc. Apparently it cost £5k last year without the lid etc and they want £3k now but it needs to be gone by the end of the week (moving house). I've snuck a sneaky £2k bid in.

As for the dirty sex pond comment, I'll be taking my fence down if I do get it :D:D

Any bath with jets you also need to clean with chemicals or they go rancid, so it's just as much work as following a packet for the hot tub IMO.

PS with his usual gate keeping I see!

Do you own a hot tub?

Because lol it's 6 different products you need to use not just lol chlorine lolz.

Guess what parents have one lolz.

Yes I have one.

A hot tub is treated no different to a swimming pool, there are no mysterious chemicals that go in to "stop it killing you" lol I add Chlorine to water each time I use it. Well actually I don't even do that since my hot tub generates it's own Chlorine and cleans the water using the FreshWater salt system.

You don't necessarily need anything other than Chlorine to run a hot tub.

Thats coming from someone who's father in law works in the hot tub business and has done for well over 15 years. And someone who used to have one.

Obviously, it's good to clean everything out every so often, a bit like your bath or toilet really.

I take it the metal parts in his hot tubs get on well with calcium and magnesium.

No foam is produced in his hot tubs because everyone showers and removes make up before getting into them.

The pH levels magically stay in the right zone?

You don't even need chlorine fyi if you have a modern hot tub with ozone cleaning.

What 6 different products are you adding to a hot tub?

Why would calcium cause issues to the metal inside the tub? Lack of calcium in the water sends it out of balance resulting in the water becoming corrosive which can cause issues. Obviously too much can then result in the water becoming scale forming. Ideally your calcium levels want to be around 250ppm.

If your alkalinity is keep with spec then the pH will not move around very much at all. Some pH minus may be needed to keep it in check, or depending on the pH of your incoming water you can just add some fresh water.

You say modern hot tubs don't require chlorine due to having ozone cleaning, yet ozone generators in hot tubs have been around for years. Also ozone, or UV as some systems have, are classed as secondary sanitisers. They are designed to run alongside a primary sanitiser, be that chlorine or bromine, and allows you to run them at lower levels.
