3090 Worth it Over the 3080??

The mere fact we are arguing over 40-45 fps is very telling. Let’s be honest both are poor.

I doubt anyone could tell the difference in a blind test other than agreeing both aren’t worth having.

If a 3080 is crap so is the 3090, if a 3090 performs well so does the 3080. If you need to spend 2-3x the cost of a 3080 on a 3090 then that’s your business.

VRAM. pay attention.

AAAAAnd what difference does that make? Don't hear of people with 3080's saying MS2020 doesn't work or performs badly. Pay attention to reality, not your blind belief that because you spent £700 more you get a far superior experience in MS2020.

Or you paid £700 just to have 24GB of VRAM for........epeen?

3080 are selling for 3090 launch price

When I bought mine in October - 3080's weren't £1400. comparing 3080 scalpers price to 3090 MSRP is a bit of a weak argument as 3090's on the auction site are £2k+ - in fact they are SELLING for £2k+

Again, don't get me wrong - if I hadn't have got a 3080 - I'd have bought a 3090 as I game everyday @ 4k (well when they were ~£1400). Just the 3090 as a gamer isn't worth it over the 3080 for performance.

If you waited thinking prices were coming down and stock would improve or the 3080Ti was coming out to fill a gap - then you'll be pushed towards a 3090 and the extra cost.

Those that got a 3080FE for £649 are the true winners and people who bought one for £100-£200 over RRP way back in October early NOvemeber a close second - back then 'd have bought a 3090.

IN fact if the 3090 was worth it over the 3080 considering MSRP's I'd have bought one. 15% extra perf in games (5% in MS2020) isnt worth 100% extra cost. Just isn't.

The ONLY time a 3090 is worth it @ £1400 MSRP is when a 3080 costs £1,190 at MSRP - 15% cost for 15% performance.

In todays parity, looking at scalped prices on auction site with no warranty  3080 sells for £1800 and 3090 for £2100 so now you do pay 15% extra for the 15% performance! SO at last scalping made the 3090 worth it at £2100 - line em up folks.

STill preferring early bird prices though. :p;)

Totally agree. But a 3090FE that exists and is in my PC right now is worth far more to me than a 3080FE I can't buy, or a 3080 AIB that's approaching 3090 prices that I still have to jump through hoops to get.

Would I have been happy with a 3080? Yep (apart from niggling worries about VRAM size).

Personally I'm just glad to be free of the stress of jumping on stock alerts, and enjoying using my 3090FE in VR where it has made a massive improvement over my previous card.

*Strokes my £650 3080*

:p :D

Must say it is mighty tempting to put it up on ebay but then I have nothing to fall back to, well.... I have still got my 290 :o Kind of regret selling my vega 56 now.

I have bought a Gigabyte 3090 and paid stupid money for it because there was very little realistic chance of getting a 3080. I need more poke than my 1080 for VR so it was a case of pay up or wait for an unknown length of time. I think that industrial scale mining is the largest of several reasons for the situation as it is now.

Oh the FOMO, yes well I can understand that - I questioned myself when I paid £850 for my 3080 and can't myself beleive current 3080 2nd hand prices.

If you dont own either a 3080 or a 3090 and you are buying now, auction site -the 3090 is 15% more in cost than the 3080 so is 'just worth it. In fact you could say 14% of the cost so you get 1% more perf (0.2% more fps in MS2020).

So finally a 3090 is worth it buying today. if you suffered severe FOMO and the costs have been normalized in your brain by deviation from the norm. You have gotten used to the high prices.

The scalping (like consoles), the extra pressure due to non available stock, mining BOOM to help accelerate the planet to climate catatrophe, lockdown conditions and a bubble in gaming interest has pushed these all cards high.

Those in early were the winners. BIg winners and lots of money left over to get the next gen card. I'm F5'ing NOW! :D

I've had zero desire to flog my 3070 FE. A good GPU is essential to my only real hobby these days...flight sims and sim racing.

May as well keep it and mine the profits you would have got from selling it.

Yup pretty much! I'm getting enjoyment from having this 3080 now where as if I didn't, the money would just be sitting in the bank account doing nothing.

Just wish there some other good games to play at the moment though, pretty much only valheim and a replay of prey currently, not exactly putting the 3080 to good use... :p

ooooh I did enjoy Prey - great game.

Yeah as gamers and the £850 I paid for mine I could make £1k minus fees but I game a lot as I've been gaming 30 years, it's my main winter relaxing hobby. I had to pay £165 more for a concept 2 rower than RRP to get it earlier and they were +£700 over RRP at the start of the 2nd/3rd? lockdown.

3080 is THE gamers card - the 3090 bought by folk too slow for stock or quibbling over the early price increases of £1-200, waited too long thinking stock would become available or prices normalise and now have to splooge £1400 more than an early 3080 to get a 3090. If you are buying a 3090 now you are L'Oreal.

Well the money was never an issue, of course availablility was the hurdle for the 3090, at least until i was shown how to get a 3060ti within a few days, but the 3090 just wipes the floor with my secondary card, no comparison. £1700 isnt much, heck i spent £4000+ on new teeth for the wife.

Yep £700 for 3 fps, makes all the silky smooth difference required. If DAveGW bought a 3090 just for the xtra perf in MS2020 then he's mugged himself off for that 5% extra performance.

Yes , Sure .My concern would be a stock overclocked 3080 (like the asus) would even be faster than this 3090 in MS2020 lool.

This thread is really subjective so I'm sitting with my 5700 XT and I'm looking at upgrading to a 2080ti fingers twitching looking at b grade stock at under £900 just ready to pull the trigger. Now there are rumours that there will be a new generation of cards soon but what's the expectation? A new card at the same price and 10% faster? No a card that's priced at £650 that beets the 2080ti I'm in I just need to load up every site press F5 until I have my glorious new card. Reality the Internet is broken and at the end of the day I'm a few hundred deep in a queue for my wanted card. That's fine because it will only take a few weeks for the said card to be in my possession. Nothing seems to be going anywhere so I take my chances on a 3090 because it's only a few hundred over the 2080ti. Again I'm stuck in a queue and thinking do I really want to pay that much more I will just try and get the 3080. So I cancel the 3090 and try really hard to get the 3080 but I'm going nowhere just browsing the 3090 is on a website I add it to the basket and pay for it £1500. But now I'm questioning myself again I can pay £650 for the 3080 should I send it back? Fast forward I definitely made the correct decision I thought that with the release of the 3080 that I would be lucky to get £200 for the 5700 XT but I got £565 for it so in the end the 3090 was well worth it.
