Swap boring Estate for not so boring Estate

Hi Motors,

I have a Honda Civic Estate, a great car, reliable and high spec, low mileage and full history it has it all apart from one thing, its boring. Its performance is boring and its handling is boring.

To make it worse my previous Civic had the same engine which is the 1.8 Petrol but was smaller and lighter so wasn't quite as boring but two cars with the same engine for the last five years hasn't helped.

I need an estate or something with a large boot, I'm having a bit of mid life crisis and want some performance but I dont need anything silly I'm not talking Audi RS6's here I just mean more fun to drive with a bit of go.
I appreciate the go to is probably an Octavia VRS Estate however even that is even a little to garish for me.

Are there any estates or anything else with a large boot that are understated, have decent performance and are reliable? The Civic has a 624L boot IIRC with the seats up and I don't want to lose to much from that.

Budget around £15K, I could maybe go a bit more but would prefer to stay around that or less.

Thanks

You're going to say Superb aren't you but I think its to wide for my little street!

Not sure of pricing. But golf r estate?

I nearly bought one brand new at 21k, so they can't be far off that price?

I don't think you can get much less garish than an Octavia vRS Estate can you? It's the epitome of understated :p

Awfully predictable, but this budget and requirement surely for once actually does have an M-Sport BMW 5-Series as the ideal car.

Drive really well, the 3.0d is a great all round engine, still look fairly new. Nice cars.

More likely a 3 series if a Superb is considered to be too large

Maybe garish was a little harsh on the VRS but I'm really conscious of these things. I live in a targeted area of Manchester for car theft and VW, Merc, Audi even Seat get stolen all the time by way of forced entry, the local facebook groups are riddled with it.

Any German performance car is out of the question really, only a few weeks ago where an RS6 was stolen locally and Golf R's are in the same highly desirable to balaclava clad scum category

Never heard of a Skoda getting stolen though

Not interested diesels, sorry should have said, don't do the mileage and dislike them

Manual or auto?

I’d consider Focus ST estate , around 250bhp I believe

Sorry didn't mention did I, fancy an auto for the first time. I'm a bit wary of Fords and their reliability. Focus's seem to like to dangle their weather strips from their doors for no apparent reason and that bothers me. They do look nice though, my brother has the ST diesel he only got it recently so I've not had the pleasure of looking at it due to Covid

I hear the Ford auto box is a bit rubbish too though

Edit - actually isnt their an Ecoboost with around 180BHP?

Had that issue with a couple of later model Focuses, wasn’t that much of a big deal, the first time it was sorted as that car was under warranty the second car wasn’t but I sorted it with superglue. (which I believe is what they do to fix it under warranty anyway)

Tbh gluing them back on was quicker and easier than filing a warranty claim anyway :p

Another proud Member of the Focus Superglue club here :)

Have you considered something JDM? They make some decent fast estates, emitting they maybe a little older. Subaru Legacy or even Forster. Toyota crown with a 1JZ, but they are a little blocky looking. Nissan stagea? Sure there are some others that I am not aware of.
