I hope to test drive some cars in the summer (up to 10K)

The CVT is 180 N-M at 1700rpm

the manual - better choice IMO is 200 N-M at 2250rpm.

redlines only 5500 rpm
It’s all about the torque that engine.
I have to remind myself it’s only 1000cc

The 4 pot Civic 1.5 has the opposite problem to the Ford Eco boost engine.
The cooling system isn’t up to the job with the Ford, even the Focus RS is affected, I wouldn’t touch another.
The Honda cooling system is too efficient, there are reports of fuel/oil dilution in colder climates - google it.
I was tempted to get the now discontinued 1.5 it would be the perfect car for me but I was advised to stick with the 1.0, that has no reported issues that I am aware of.
The diesel might be worth a look?

I don't know what a torquey little 1.0L is like auto wise - but IMO if you are going auto a bigger engine or at least an engine with generous torque - makes driving so easy - though modern autos are a vast improvement over older ones but coupled with a smaller engine is a very different experience to a more capable engine.

Hmm

Well I might just to have to test drive a few cars

Googling last night for reviews on cars

Mazda 3 is now top of my list

I'm not going to touch a diesel car as I do very short journies to work and back at 5am in the morning 5 to 6 days a week

I think short journeys I might be looking at the Nissan Leaf.
Providing you have somewhere to charge one?
ICE need to warm up to be efficient really.

Really good shout if it is just short journeys.

You can lease one then stick the 10k somewhere safe.

We get 28mpg out of our super efficient 1.0 Civic in winter, short journeys.

I will happily admit there’s a time & a place where EVs are much better.
It’s bad for ICE engines if they never get properly warm.

its the thirsty 1.8 though :(
anything upto 9K
short drive to work, my Focus 1.8 does 28 mpg

If your 1.8 Focus is only averaging 28mpg due to your commute, then almost all other Petrol (or Diesel) MPG figures are going to be similarly skewed.

At 9k/year then your annual fuel cost difference between say your 28mpg Focus, and even a 35mpg car (which is probably what a 50mpg+ book mpg car would achieve on your commutte) is only about £300/year - much like your "cheap tax" requirement, it's absolutely bonkers.

The ideal car would be a hybrid, but you've already discounted that on the grounds that "the cat will be nicked"

Edit:
The below site would give an idea of annual fuel cost, between different cars

Cheers mate, appreciate your post

I'll have a look later

Can't have an EV unfortunately, I did look into them last year but there's just no where to charge at home..

Hybrid is a good shout it would be the best for me (after the EV) but I just can't get the cat theft out of my head , and toyota (for example) are struggling to keep up with the demand for new cats

Go on, what’s this cat theft thing then?

The latest craze amongst undesirables - jack up a car, cut off the cat, run away, sell the cat for scrap.

Takes them less than 2 minutes from start to finish to nick one, hybrid cars are particularly appealing due to having more valuable cats in general.

These vital car parts are sought after because of the high price of the metals they contain – palladium, rhodium and platinum. These act as catalysts in a reaction to convert polluting exhaust gases into water and carbon dioxide.

Prices of palladium have doubled over two years, while rhodium is four times higher – and both are currently more valuable than gold.

Can’t beat a basic non turbo diesel for short stop start journeys.
Or a basic car like the original mini.
100yds and you could push the choke in.

Obviously not considering emissions here.

I'm sure I remember reading an article that suggested people can get anywhere between £50 to £500 for them depending on what they've been nicked from

Sounds a nightmare.
Pretty sure the cost to replace will be horrendous

I thought Direct Line had issued guidance on this...

Video for @SkodaMart -
. It is becoming a real issue, especially if you own a Prius or a Jazz.

Op - I wouldn't let it worry you that much. You can get a "cat jacket" if you are really concerned.
