3090 Worth it Over the 3080??

Not sure why your referring to games in the year 2024 I think all owners will have changed card or upgraded by then. They are far easier to obtain, when sites list them it can be in stock for more than 30mins before selling out - this thanks to the insane asking price. Again though, when it comes to the FE at least its the entry price your paying and not some of the AIB prices which can go to £2k.
The OP clearly states he wishes to keep the GPU for 5 years for 4K and 8K DLSS gaming! I'm making the point that no GPU bought today is going to be doing that well in 2024 nvm 2026.

Timely belated post this. Ahh I see the arbitrary figure now yes! I was confused as the OP posted this year (feb to be exact) which means 2021 + 5 is 2026. Clearly stated for you. ;)

I'm not sure that's true. My GTX1080 (desktop) couldn't cope well with Alyx on my Quest 2 once the 90hz/native res patch came out.

I play half life alyx on one of my laptops, gtx 1070 and it runs fine with the occasional stutter, on the gtx 1080 laptop it runs perfect. Using the oculus rift.

My gtx 1080 laptop runs all vr games max settings with no issues.

Well thats utter rubbish.

Fallout4VR would destroy that GPU.

Your talking nonsense sense, my gtx 1070 laptop will run Fallout 4 or Skyrim VR perfectly. I don't even like those games in VR. Uninstalled them after I played them a little.

But my GTX 1070, i770 laptop handles them all perfectly fine. I like more Alyx, MOH, Marvel and that 4year old laptop runs all perfectly fine. My GTX 1080 laptop does the same and finally my RTX 3070 laptop runs it perfectly too. Can't see any difference when I use these laptops for VR. The laptop VR is super convenient so I don't bother hooking up to the 3080 as its no point.

If this would help anyone, install an SSD, keep your Oculus folder and Software folder on your SSD drive. Don't upscale resolutions as you see no real difference. Underclock your laptop cpu by a little, this somehow increases performance and temps by a lot.

You've either got the world's lowest resolution VR headset or you're trolling us :p

I can't work out which it is, either way, I'd love to see how you get on with Assetto Corsa Competizione maxed out in VR, your laptop would probablt burst into flames :D

You'll definitely get reprojection with HL:Alyx and Fallout4VR at native res/90hz with a Quest 2 on a desktop 1080, let alone a laptop 1070.

I've tried it with a heavily OC'd GTX1080, detailed parts of Alyx become a stutter fest.

Guys, rest. This was the guy that thought I didnt mine 600 sheets on my 3090 (profit) since late november. When you get people stating nonsense and post to either get a reaction or skew a narrative thats not the same as the discussion point its time to move on.

Ha! After 4.5 days, I'm at £68 with 3090 24/7 and 6900xt (with half the hashrate) overnight :D

£600 since November is hardly a bold claim!

Exactly, he was calling it bs which was conservatively mining as I completed valhalla putting in nearly 200 hours by this point and I toned down the hashrate to keep temps low for a while too. People spout a bit of envy or try and mar you with "lol double the price for 3fps, my 3080 is the same for £700" malarky but the reality was I stopped caring after two months as the card has cost what people are paying for regular 3080s right now so its a completely moot point. The 3090 cost me no more than it cost most people to buy a 3080. The double the price is now an irrelevant statement..

So to revisit the OP and the topic title.. Yes! for me it was absolutely worth it, not though if you aren't prepared to mine on it when your not gaming is all I would add.

It's a weird argument to begin with really.

I'm very happy with both of my over-priced graphics cards and I've already had plenty of enjoyment out of both of them to the point where I don't care about the cost and given my last top tier card lasted me 5 years, there's plenty more value to be had from them yet!

I would be paying more attention to the longevity aspect when it pertains to the VRAM performance, re-BAR and any further game/driver improvements how the cards age.

What a joker.

I'm playing Project Cars 2 max settings using a gtx 1070 laptop on the Oculus Rift. Not really a single stutter smooth as butter. I prefer PC2 to Assesto corsa, but even when I payed Asseto Corsa ( I don't have the competition version) it ran perfect. Mind you this is when I bought the kit 2/3 years ago and it ran all VR games smooth. Obviously I'm not incresing resolution scale, I leave it at 100%.

The only game with a little stutter in the drive thorough scene is MOH and that lasts for 30seconds. 99% of the time the experience is stutter free and max settings that the game allows.

I don't know what your doing wrong.

u must have a magical gtx 1070 as my 2080 cant full resolution 90hz fo4vr without reprojection.

Ok, give yourself a medal.

My point is that you can even mine with a gtx 1070 or 1080 , so coming out to claim mining 600 is some advantage of a 3090 over a 3080 is total nonsense.

This is not a mining thread, and miners are frowned upon by gamers with recent GPU scarcity issues so I'm not sure why you keep crying about mining.

I don't play Fallout 4 vr ( I hate fallout games, no offence intended). I just tested it 3years ago when I got my Oculus Rift headset. I didn't notice any issues.

Skyrim I tried longer as I like the desktop version and no performance issues what so ever on a gtx 1070 laptop. I played all the intro parts and could not cope with the motion sickness, but played like 3 hours of Skyrim, no issues. I preferred my experience of the normal game.

Other VR games I have installed on a Gtx 10 Series laptops and my RTX 3070 laptops that run smooth as butter max settings with resolution scale at 100%:

  • Vader immortal 1 to 3
  • Star wars squadrons
  • Zero caliber
  • Google Earth
  • Dead and buried
  • Robo recall
  • Lone Echo
  • Project Cars 2
  • Asetto Corsa
  • Moh
  • Climb
  • Arisona sunshine
  • Blade and Sorcery
  • Bone works
  • The Walking Dead
Many more games and they all worked, without any performance issues. And I liked the laptop more for that ad I could set it up very easily :)

Ps: I like RTX 3070 laptop more, as I can play vr any where and it's a decent laptop but very pricey, runs everything vr as well, even though it is not even as powerful as the desktop version. I recommend anyone looking for an RTX card to buy a laptop of OcUk. The MSI laptops are just so awesome looking with the metallic build. But remember it's a laptop not the full blown card.

Laptops can run VR without any performance issues. Anyone saying other wise has set it up wrong, or some other issue.
