Car insurance - ripoffs

Just renewed mine £400 with Aviva. I didn't think that was bad - C63, 33 yrs old, 11 years NCD and very low risk postcode. Bit annoying they increased the premium by nearly 10% because I got a windscreen fitted last year, but hey ho. I've been with Admiral for years but they decided the absolute best they could do was £750.

Quotes are usually valid for 30 days, though. So you could have either used the reference number for the original quote, or just called the insurer up and ask them to retrieve the quote from date X.

It's farcical that quotes jump up closer to renewal date - I understand they are basing it on modelling of what the majority are likely to do, but if you had an original quote 21 days in advance then you fall into the lower risk category and there's zero reason for the price jumping up just because you re-quote a few weeks later.
I never knew lol ffs

Everytime I went back to a comparison site it would always rerun search and update the price or they would show as expired. A lot of the cheaper ones I noticed seemed to want you buy by the next day in order to get that price

Well another thing I learnt.

Fwiw my old 996 turbo (pretty nippy, even by modern standards:D), was about 300 quid a year at 30-34 (had it 4 years), my e92 M3 is almost double that and all I can come up with is due to more being sold so therefore more claims (and also, there's a slight chance there's a different set of age groups for the average driver of an M3 vs a 911:D). Also the guy that said about a fiesta, at that age I had a 996 carrera (was only 14 grand, so pretty cheap) and I think I was paying similar to you at that age. On a tangent, I keep seeing this go Henry advert saying about teaching kids to be responsible, by paying monthly for a card for them:rolleyes:, that must be the definition of ironic:p.

might explain some of it which probably goes along with people taking less care of them.
Yep an example would be I used to work with a girl who had a Nissan Micra, about 7 years old owned from new. One day in the office she mentioned it had NEVER been serviced....

It's probably less about the risk factor and more about the fact that they have a more 'desperate' customer who hasn't yet made arrangements. Someone who is getting a quote a couple of days before their current policy expires is going to have to buy insurance in the next couple of days, they can't sit around for a week running quotes, ringing round different firms, haggling with their current insurer etc. I'm not saying rational people would 'panic buy' but (as this thread illustrates) not everyone thinks rationally, some people just go with the perceived short-term 'easy option'.

Now that's strange. I went exactly the other way. W204 C63, 35 and med-risk postcode. Admiral renewal was £750ish but Aviva was around £450 on a comparison website. Phoned Admiral who price matched it.

Yea I thought my E220 was expensive for what it was. I did the ring around on the car and also some online checks and all were £600 and the renewal came in last week for £568. Luckily I am no renewing as it goes back next month.

Defo recommend sorting car insurance 21 days in advance.

I got some good quotes early but procrastinated and wanted to drive down prices even more.

Sorted it a week before but sadly the quotes were more then I initially were getting from comparison sites. About £100 or so more.

Ended up just sticking to current provider in the end, their renewal quote was poor and managed to get them to reduce it with some tweaking to mileage and excess.

Saved myself around £400 but had I gone with the initial comparison quotes I could have saved a further £100 and got more bang for Buck.

I know for next year don’t procrastinate

Quotes go up everytime you requote I've noticed. Maybe it's to stop people doing quote after quote until it comes back cheaper

Has anyone done any quotes for tesla, they seem sky Hugh compared to normal cars. Assuming it's do to crashes taking out a large chunk of batteries and that parts are probably not that common.

Yeah it does but sometimes I’ve seen it come back around the same price or cheaper. Guess it’s luck of draw and when you run the quotes.

Though I just went through my emails looking at the quotes I received, there’s not a lot in it compared to what I ended up paying.

Just noticed the cheapest quotes I got were from Hastings YouDrive or Hastings Essential. One of which I didn’t realise is telematics based and the other has poor defacto reviews so.

Next year though will definitely run the quotes and contact companies direct see if they can further reduce comparison prices.

I’m a young driver anyway so in comparison for friends my insurance ain’t that expensive...But i do drive a pretty gutless car :p

My first year wasn’t too bad either, but I’ve learnt a lot from this thread
