Maybe play VDB more another technical player for the opposition to worry about

VdB is a system player. He needs to be in a team that is well drilled and has a structure to their movement and passing. When he doesn’t know where his teammates will be or who will be making what runs he is not very good. Really strange but considering our “style” of football.

I'm not familiar with Murtough but he was involved in both our academy overhaul and the women's team building which have both been successful. I guess we'll have to see how the restructuring turns out and if he's anything more than a puppet.

Let's just hope he's not too old for this ****

I can't hear his name without thinking of Lethal Weapon!

Ahh Woodward got sick of all the abuse and decided to employ a scapegoat. Sensible chap.

Nicky Butt leaving. Apparently he din't get on with Murtough and couldn't face working for him in the new structure. Butt probably one the more credible coaches in terms of what he has achieved in developing youth talent into first team. The other rumour today is that they are going to extend Ole's contract which for the life of me I cannot fathom. Surely the time to do that is at the end of the season. I mean it's not like Ole is gonna walk away and we all know what happened to the form the last time he got a contract. Apparently the board are happy with the progress. Second int he league playing terrible football most of the time. If you are being honest the only thing that's improved tangibly since Mourinho is Bruno Fernandes. Uncharitable I know but I honestly can't see it much different.

I've also been giving more thought to the coaching set up. Whats people's opinions on Carrick? I thought he was talented but never really got hold of a game and was very vulnerable under the press. Good passer but no leader and I wonder if the blend of polite ex player coaches is the right blend. I mean there is only "shorts" Phelan that looks like he could tear someone a new one. I've lost confidence in this set up to make us genuine contenders. I just don't think they are nasty enough.

United would be beyond stupid for doing this. Its not like he will be in demand.

This is United we are talking about. Thats literally the reason you give players/managers new contracts. To protect yourself from interested parties either getting them on the cheap due to low contracts or them leaving on a free. If Ole was sacked tomorrow, who in the league would genuinely want him. Out of all the teams. I'm sure some of those near the bottom might give him a punt but no one in the top half would give him a second thought. Hes also going to have to take a paycut at his next job.

I like Ole and think hes done well in lots of ways at United but none of those ways are things that are exclusive to top managers. All of the "hard parts" of management that differentiate between the decent and the top tier managers he is woefully lacking.

There are other things to consider. Ole has one year left on his deal this summer, it would likely affect summer transfer dealings if it was believed we weren't going to offer him a new deal. While we're continuing to improve it would be stupid to put that in jeopardy.

So extend his contract for one more year. No one is going to come to United for Ole and no one is going to not come to United because our bang average manager only has a year left on his contract. United hold all the power here. If I was at United and Ole came and said, I'm leaving if I don't get a new contract I would laugh at him and say jog on.

Genuinely, does anyone think that if we took Fernandes out of this United team we would be any better than we were before he arrived?

That's an odd take. It wouldn't effect transfers at all. We aren't talking Klopp or Pep here...

Continuing to improve? Lmao no you aren't. You've gradually got worse under Ole.

And how does that effect the team if they see the club doesn't believe in the manager long term? You have to consider these things, it's not as simple as you're making it out to be. Especially as there are no good replacement available now.

I'm not convinced Ole can take us to the very top but while we're still improving it would be suicide to replace him and start a rebuild all over again.

Good managers are hard to come by which is why pretty much all the top teams have plans for replacing managers. City waited years for Pep, Liverpool courted Klopp and when he leaves they will have a plan for his successor.

I think there are plenty of good managers who would do a far better job than Ole. Just off the top of my head (not saying we could get all of these)

Bielsa
Nagelsmann
Brendan Rogers
Ancellotti
Allegri

We could have had Pochettino.

There aren't millions of them which is why you can't sit on your hands and hope that at the very moment your current manager hits rock bottom one of the top managers in the world is available.

I think we will see just how much "improvement" Ole has overseen next season when all the other top clubs in the league aren't ****. When Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal aren't all having awful seasons. Our points total in the league massively flatters our form.

I guess the one positive thing to take from any contract discussions is that 1/2/3/4/5 year contracts mean very little these days. So if he has an awful spell, which is pretty much guaranteed at some point, and we have fans back in the stadium, he’ll be gone. I can’t imagine it would be very expensive to give him the boot, he’s not Mourinho after all.

But I agree with Fez, we never seem to have any sort of plan in place. If he ever did get the shove, we’d just grab the next thing out there and it would be chance if we got any of the managers listed.
