Got the upgrade itch

B560 mobos aren't available yet, best I can tell

Wow OCUK are really slacking, I've got one sat in my garage, and an H570 board. Maybe call them tomorrow and ask why they haven't updated the website yet?

CPU: Intel Core i5-10400F 2.9 GHz 6-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Alpenföhn Matterhorn Rev. C – Black Edition 62.39 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: ASRock B560 Pro4 ATX LGA1200 Motherboard
Memory: Crucial Ballistix 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory
Storage: Western Digital SN750 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive

Can't list the price on here any more, but it is more than competitive, I just used the standard PC Part Comparison site to get a list of what is available for you.

Thank you mate, really appreciate it. That Steel legend board has an immediate advantage over the 5600X build I was looking at that I'd not appreciated - I've got a [now old] AX760 PSU with a 4+4 out rather than a 6+2 out, so that mobo will save me another £150 on whatever the equivalent quality PSU is now (RM850?). Two more questions if I may:

1) If I can't get hold of Crucial Ballistix, is there anything wrong with HyperX Fury RAM?
2) On userbenchmark, the 'Effective Speed' score for the 10400F is only 16% higher than my 3570k. Am I missing something?

A third cheeky question - is there benefit to going for a 10600KF, which is a fraction more for OC potential?

You are confusing the 12v EPS with the PCI-E, 4+4/8-pin is the EPS connector for CPU 12v.

I chose Ballistix as it OC's better, but there is nothing wrong with Fury as long as it's 3200MHz+, as for userfailmark I won't even open their webpage, it's a garbage website.

No harm, but it depends if you fancy OC'ing it, and the cost differential is like 40% more.

It is a bit of a pain taking this extra step but after deciding what motherboard you want it is worth going on the website for that board and the maker will list the ram that they have qualified as suitable for that board

Ah ok. Top left power socket on the ATX boards - 12v sounds familiar (can you tell its been a while since I assembled a PC) but its definitely 4 pin on my z77 D3H board and 4+8 pin on the B550-F, whereas the Asrock boards seem to be 4+4 (for which I have the appropriate cable on my current PSU).

Current spec then:
CPU: 10600k
Cooler: Dark Rock 4 (not pro)
Mobo: B560 Steel Legend
RAM: HyperX Fury 32gb 3200
Storage: 980 1tb M.2

Comes to a lot less than I was planning on spending on the 5600X build. Will take note re: your comment on userbenchmark. Have been a little too reliant on that site lately..

Careful if you are going with the 10600K, don't overpay for the B560, if you can get a Z490/590 for a similar cost, as we've taken the bargain basement 10400f/B560/16GB and moved the goal posts somewhat.
The main reason the build will be cheaper is due to the Ryzen 5 5600X being currently well over MSRP, vs the 10600K(F) which are nearly 50% less in some cases.

Fair points. There's a few factors at play:

1) I don't want to faff with changing my PSU out or adding new cables or frankly rewiring my case for this build. Time is precious at the moment and I'd like to just drop the built motherboard straight into the gap the Z77 will leave.
2) 10600K can be delivered Sunday, 10400F cannot. :)
3) 10600K gives some room for OC'ing since as I understand it you cannot (correct me if wrong) OC the 10400F?

That said, if I could lump sorting the PSU out - what's the benefits of a Z490 board (Z590s at that price look crap) over this B560?

Thank you - just found the Asrock QVL for that board.

Went with the 5600X (+ B550-F) after all as I worked out the component price in a bundle and its a hair over retail without any RAM incompatibility headaches and with OC options, and a nicer board than the B560/Z490 choices. Figured in too that I'll want a 3070/6800 before long and I don't want to know I could've have had more out of them if I'd spent another hundred on R5 over the 10400F and/or have to do another swap and rebuild. Will post a pic when I've squeezed all into my old Phanteks beaut. Cheers Journey.

These things happen, it is good to explore alternatives though. Getting a good deal on a bundle is always a nice result, and like you say given the changes you made to the 'bargain basement bundle' it meant you took away some of the bargain. :)

Just an FYI, this late on in the life of a platform you can pretty much ignore QVL unless you are going workstation or very high speed out of spec, if it was first gen DDR5 then a QVL becomes more relevant again, as there are always teething issues with compatibility.

I've just finished putting together a B560/10400f/16GB DDR4 build this morning as a drop in upgrade to 2500K/Z68/12GB (weird) as the chap had managed to get a 3070FE and was seeing dire performance from it. As he managed to get the FE model 3070 the money saved versus an AIB card literally paid for the whole CPU/Mobo/RAM upgrade, and he's so happy he told me to keep the old kit, so that was nice.

Looking forward to seeing what your end result is, and take your time, read the motherboard manual etc. :)

They do, and yes indeed. I've got a bit more value out of it than where I started and I've done it in a way that I'm not paying through the nose for AM4. The 10400F is the bargain, certainly.. but for £100 I won't have the grief of wondering what could have been (and every frame will count while I'm playing FS2020 on a 580 until a 3070/6800 materialises). The free Hitman & Crysis Remastered on the 10400F would've been nice, but I'll get to those in time..

Ah ok, good tip. I read that a few people were struggling to get 3200mhz out of the 5600/B550 combination with anything other than Corsair/'Ryzen Tuned' stuff that costs another ~£50 for a 32gb (twin not quad module) kit.

Sweet. What're you going to do with the 2500k?

Manual? :D Will do. Bought a 4pin to 8pin cable as well so hopefully I can continue to use my PSU.

I've just popped in in an old case I had with a PSU and an R9 270X Graphics card, I'm donating it to a friend who lives up the road, it'll run Minecraft, Roblox for his kids until he gets off furlough and can buy something better.

It's usually on a CD now.. not sure why no idea where you'd put it. Sometimes you get them in form of a rectangular paper item, like a smaller book. :p

Can't say I've had an issues at all, I've also build a couple of machine with 64GB and 3200MHz wasn't a problem with Crucial Ballistix

Probs in this odd 5.25" thing I have in my case that periodically I'll slap a blu ray in or burn something important to an MDISC on. :)

Ballistix unfortunately seem to be out of stock just about everywhere unless you're willing to fork out (and coming from a time where LEDs had just started to supplant cold cathodes, I want some of that RGB goodness).

Personally I think your system isn't that bad and the only way you're really gonna see bigger gains from your current system is with a better gpu. I'd try your luck trying to get one and go from there. By the time you might actually be able to get one we could be on rtx4000 series lol

Your cpu is not that bad though, why you wanna upgrade exactly? Your fps not high enough?

I would say go 2nd hand but even used gpus are crazy expensive for now.
