Hi all, hopefully posting this in the right place!

As title says just looking for some recommendation on the best external sound amp for these headphones please, main use will be for playing games. Some music and YouTube as well but priority is gaming.

I was looking at the Sound BlasterX G6? Will that be good enough or is it overkill?

Not got much experience with amps though as I’ve always used usb headphones before now so any guidance would be much appreciated.

Depends on the impedance of your DT990s, are they the 80ohm version or the 250ohm? Both will benefit from an amp compared to onboard audio. Some modern boards with decent audio codec will probably sound okay with the 80Ohm version, the 250Ohm will definitely need an amp. They'll probably get loud enough with onboard audio, but they will not sound their best, at least from personal experience.

The G6 is a pretty good amp/dac and has mic input, which will clean up your mic audio as well if you have one that's 3.5mm. Depends on your budget really. Fiio E10k is a decent budget option if you have the 80ohm. The other options in the G6 price range that I can think of right now, are the Topping DX3 Pro and Fiio K3/K5.

SBX G6 will drive those easily.
I myself have them with 250 ohm Edition.
Creative also has nice wallet friendly £70 B-stock price for G6.

Though for gaming SB X3 (B-stock £75) would be another option.
Besides average head shape based HRTF it has also customizable Super X-Fi HRTF and DT990 is one headphone with profile for it.
That should give best sound positioning.

This. £75 isnt bad either.

Cheers for the replies, I ended up going for the FiiO K3 with the 250ohm version of the 990pros and they go plenty loud enough for me. Really comfy headphones can wear them for hours.

How are you finding them now? They sound any better with a bit of wear in?

That "burn in" is definitely almost completely about listener's brain getting burned in.

Only time I can be in some way be certain about headphones having had effect from "burn in" is with headphones, which likely didn't go through any kind longer factory testing to keep price down.
