The NOT Buying a Graphics Card Thread!!!

It's about 50% faster from what I can tell. That would be ok if I could sell the 1070ti for current second hand prices and buy the 3060ti for MRSP but that's not really the case - by the time 3060ti is back to MRSP the 1070ti value will have fallen.
If I'm spending £200+ 'cost to change' then I want a bigger delta on performance.

I've done upgrade of similar levels (~50%) in the past but the price of those cards has been a lot cheaper than £369.

Sub-MSRP? Hmmmm, £649 was only for the few and was cheaper than a 1080ti on release ~£720 - so I think you'll be waiting a while unfortunately
Yeah, I can see it being 2023 potentially, when a new generation has come out and either driven down the prices on secondhand 3000 series and/or the newer tech is in itself a good jump in performance meaning there are new midrange parts offering 3080 levels of performance.

well had a quick look on pc part picker, best card under £500 was a rtx2060 for £450, said it elsewhere butu 4000 series is probably my next buy now, unless i some how find a 3080 2nd hand for like £300 if we ever get a big enough crypto crash.

Only way to easily get one is paying way over the top without any

With the issues I've seen some people are having with some cards, there's not a chance I'll pay over the odds from a scalper with no warranty. That's just asking for disappointment. Can only hope the situation improves

That's a ******** msrp though, the staff here have covered how msrp values these days are nonsense.

Yes, in a few years it may be cheaper, but then your 1070ti resale value is down too, if people can get a 3060ti brand new for £369, a 2nd hand 5+ year old 1070ti is going to be worth maybe £100-£150. So spending 220-270? Whereas now you can sell a 1070ti for £350 easy at the moment, so with the same expenditure, be able to buy a £570-£620 card. Only difference is you get it now.

That's the point I'm making though, I'm not prepared to spend £220-270 either now or in the future for a switch to 3060ti as it doesn't offer enough performance delta. The only way it could possibly work would be if I somehow timed it perfectly to sell the 1070ti whilst prices are still inflated just before a slump in the market and then pickup a new card a few weeks later, but I'm not confident I could do that.

The current shortages/scalping have muddied the waters a bit but I never even tried to buy at MRSP anyway as it was higher than I was prepared to pay.

Indeed - all these folks paying non retailers via auction sites are going to get stung badly when it comes to warranty. Though you are covered by the buyers cover so you 'should' still be able to get your money back. As a seller via that auction site they always side with the buyer.

As for a crypto crash - well these cards still do have excellent hash rates so there could be some small time 1 card miners who put them up to recoup some money but a mined card - they'll all say they've never been mined :) so they are gonna have to be cheap.

next gen comes out and the miners will 'bot' those sales up and then release the 3000 series cards when they have a replacement with higher hash rates.

They should ban pointless mining - just burning leccy for producing - nothing from processing.

If folk are happy with 1080p gaming (as apparently most still are) you don't need an expensive card for 120fps @ 1080p or benefit from new tech like DLSS 2.0.

1080p @ 120hz is entry level PC gaming equivalent or better than the console option.
1440p @ 120hz is mid range gaming
1440pUW /4k @ 120hz is high end gaming and is the master race :D

in 10 years time 4k 120hz will be common place - even consoles will probably manage it. I'd have to see 8k vs 4k but unless it's draw droppingly much better then cant really see going past 4k is required for an amazing gaming experience. Maybe 120 fps for minimums ;)

Thanks. Yeah, when you put it like that it does seem obvious :D

My dream of a sim racing rig is going to remain a dream for some time it seems. The PS4 for I bought for £150 four years ago seems like more and more of a bargain now.
I initially ran triples on a 970 but soon realised needed more so got 980ti. You can run sims on both cards but you have to turn things down to get decent FPS. Then again a sim like Iracing runs well on lower GPUs as it is not using the eye candy of say ACC.

I bought a Series X last week. Early indication is that it is a very solid piece of kit. Running a 1660ti in my PC, and it's doing a good job with my 43" Super Ultra Wide and also managed OK with VR in sim racing. I will be waiting until such time that I can get an item without having to donate a kidney.

iRacing is a weird one from what I read. Dan Suzuki Tweeted the other day he was having drops to 30 odd FPS with a Ryzen 5950 and RTX 3090. Must be a bottleneck somewhere surely.

I’m looking to make the switch from 1080p to 1440p so in addition to upgrading my 1060 6GB I’ll also need a new monitor.

Given how hard it is to get a GPU at a sensible price I think I’m just going to stick with my 1060 and 1080p monitor and maybe if I can get a PS5 for some Sony exclusives.
