This is my current setup.

Ryzen 7 Eight Core 2700X 4.35GHz (Socket AM4) Processor
Gigabyte Aorus GA-AX370-Gaming K7 AMD X370 (Socket AM4) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
Gigabyte Radeon RX VEGA 64 WindForce OC 8GB HBM2 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Team Group Dark Pro "8Pack Edition" 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C14 3200MHz Dual Channel Kit
Super Flower 850W Power Supply
Samsung SSD 850 Evo 1TB

I've been meaning to upgrade for sometime since my motherboard doesn't support 3200 RAM, so I've had to run it at 2400.

As per the title, I was aiming for a Ryzen 5 5600X, but is it worth spending extra for the Ryzen 7 5800X when my main use for the PC is gaming?

Motherboard wise, I was looking at the MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk.

I've heard that Ryzens love fast memory, is it worth upgrading to 3600?

With the SSD, is it worth upgrading to a M.2 card? Are they much faster then standard SATA SSD's?

You might be better off going to ryzen 3600 as your board supports that CPU otherwise you have have to change motherboard which is an expensive affair.

but for gaming 5600X is plenty. B550 tomahawk is a great board. But if you don’t need all the fan fairs etc I would suggest you look at some of the B550m boards as they are much cheaper. Or even the ASUS B550 Prime P. Anyway pretty much all B550 board you should be perfectly fine with 5600x but some older B450 and X470 board will be fine also just need to make sure those boards have MAX in their naming and have bios support for zen3 CPU.

In terms of RAM, I think you can live with your 3200MHz.

But in reality you really should be upgrading GPU first. But now buying GPU is not an easy process....

I think in the mean time get your Vega start mining and earn som money to put towards the upgrades you want.

For gaming I would just get an intel 11400f, use the money you save on a 5600x to get an nvme drive and use it as well as the SSD for more room for games over the 2 drives https://youtu.be/LYdHTSQxdCM
Sell on your current cpu & motherboard will cut the cost of the upgrade

For gaming m.2 Vs sata as of today makes no difference, and that includes pcie 4.0.

As for the CPU...... I mean.....it's marginal, the 5800x is better, it overclocks well, I have one, it's great.

How much better than a 5600x, when factoring in everything, basically not much, so depends on how much the cash difference makes to you.

And yes I run 3600mhz RAM and it's fine.

Think you wouldnt be disappointed with a 5600x, would get a msi b550 gaming edge same as a tomahawk but has wifi plus 2.5gbe ethernet instead of 1gbe and a 2.5 gbe, m.2 not really get one when you need more space

Not sure you would gain much with current card, especially if playing above 1080p. What seems to be the trouble at present?

Low cost..
I think your ram is fine as it is, isn't it rated for 3200 CL14 which would be sweet as it is or you could run at 3600 C16.
You could swap in a 3700x (your motherboard supports that with a bios update) for ~£270 and that would possibly also allow faster ram (controller is on CPU)
Or perhaps a 3900x eh? eh?

High cost..
Plan to upgrade your GPU or you will waste the CPU upgrade
Keep your ram
Get a new motherboard, CPU and NVME storage
I would suggest the 5800x or even 5900x as the target but that depends on how much you have to spend. Do you want to drop an extra 4 threads, do you stream or do other things while playing. The 5600x will be fine for now but I suspect a little bit more will make it last a bit longer.
SSD wise yea just grab a basic M.2 (the IBM SN550 is a popular budget version and about same cost as a basic SSD), or if you want get a better Gen 3 drive as you might not see much benefit for the cost of Gen 4.

Alternative..
Just saying i7 10700k could be a bargain atm

BTW I run a 3700x with a 3080 on a B450 motherboard just fine. I may get a 5800x + motherboard, if I can find one at a nice price but the difference in performance at 1440p ultra wide will be slight.

Doesn't strike me that there are any truly cost effective upgrades for your current setup other than maybe a new video card. Assuming you can find one at RRP!

You'd be better saving waiting for another CPU generation before upgrading IMO unless you can find >3900x at a good price.

It's there anything not running at a level you're happy with?

Thanks for the help.

I am tempted to grab the Ryzen 7 for an extra £50.
I know some people are saying I need to upgrade my graphics card, but that isn't going to feasibly happen until next year. I'm not paying stupid prices.
I'm gonna stick with my RAM and SSD for the time being, maybe upgrade next year when I do my graphics card.

This motherboard has been nothing but a pain in the **** since day 1, I don't want to go into details, because I've made plenty of posts in the past. But between this motherboard and graphics card, I don't think I'll ever touch Gigabyte again.

I was going to upgrade when the Ryzen 3000 series came out, but people told me it wasn't worth it.
I've waited patiently and I think the 5000 series is as good time as any. :p

I'd check out the 11400F since it performs the same in games as a 5600X unless you're gaming at 1080P with a 3090 and even then the lead is small, it also costs half the price so you could get a the CPU + motherboard for less than the cost of just a 5600X. Put the savings towards the next tier up of GPU when the time comes to upgrade that.

I'd stick with the ram you have and just overclock it as it's Samsung B die and overclocks well, I have the same ram and have overclocked it to 3800/14 so unless you find your running out of ram and need more capacity I'd stick with it.

Would definetly grab an nvme for Windows as it will improve the snappiness.

I'm surprised to see so many people suggest B550 boards. Last I checked they were hardly any different in price to fully fledged x570 boards. I think I saw asus prime x570-p on here a while back for 140 which is a great board

One of those with a 3600 will keep your happy for ages imo, however a 5600x would be nicer if you can afford.

Well, gone a bit over budget, but I'm *pretty* sure I'm gonna order this for myself tonight.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £759.47 (includes shipping: £10.50)
170 for a B550 seems a bit much, anything special about that one over a full x570 board (eg asus prime x570-p)?

Damn nice cpu and ssd though.

I think SSD is not worth upgrading to M.2.
In real world usesage you will not find any difference unless if you are running a benchmark to show off the scores or editing 4/8k raw footage, you will require a M.2

All together but I'm having to keep the case barebones at the moment

I'm sitting here just downloading and the CPU's sitting at 78°C!

My brother gave me his old Corsair H115i RGB Platinum, which I most admit was a bugger to fit on the CPU.
I've reseated it 3 times but it's made no difference to the temperature.

Do I need some sort of controller for the fans on the heatsink?
No matter how hot it gets, the speed doesn't seem to change at all.

I've got the cooler plugged into CPU_FAN on the motherboard, rather then PUMP_FAN, because I read that's what your supposed to do.
I did try it on PUMP_FAN but it made no difference.

The 5800X can run rather hot as it uses similar power to the 5950X but all the heat is concentrated in just the one chiplet.
