hey guys,

going to be ordering soon some new parts for a custom build, the only thing im not getting from new is the GPU..

Im looking at a 1060 to hold me over until prices normalize again!

Im fine with 1080p gaming atm as needed..but would I get away with a 3gb version, or should it really be the 6gb one?

Cheers.

6gb all day, be easier to resale later on as well. 3gb cards just don't really cut it anymore. 6GB will allow the card to stretch its legs abit more.

A 1060 6gb allows you to set higher settings on games, I don’t mean ultra settings as the card just struggles on any newer as games.

I have a 3gb card and honestly wouldn’t recommend either a 3gb or 6gb 1060 if you intend on playing newer games.

Warzone for example plays at about 70-80 fps on all low and on high about 30 a 50 fps average.

3GB because 6GB cards are overpriced as they are good for mining. You'll be looking at a price of ~£300 for a 6GB card.

A 3GB version should be attainable for <£200.

So if you want to lose these least money that or an RX 570/480/580 4GB.

Deffo don't get the 3gb if you're considering 1440p esp. Just ain't gonna cut in in modern games

They're not that much more last time I checked? Over a month ago now mind

4GB of VRAM is already saturated at 1080p high.If you're fine with low to medium gfx settings then sure go for the 3GB variant to tide you over.

Depends entirely on the price of either.

The difference in performance is less than 10-15%.

I've owned both and the whole vram thing is nonsense tbh especially at 1080p.

I had a 750ti and upgraded to a 1050, then a 1060 3gb then a 1060 6gb then a 1070 then a 1080 then a 2070 super.

That's been over the past 4 years.

I would say that the 1060 3GB will be fine if it's substantially cheaper than the 6GB. I should have stuck with mine tbh until the 1080 came along as the 1060 6gb and 1070 weren't really worth the upgrade. But the 1080 was a FE edition I had to get rid and then get a proper one without a blower cooler.

If the 6GB is less than 20% more money then sure go for it otherwise don't and get the 3GB. Once the market crashes both cards will be worth less than £100 so if the 6GB is a premium and you are happy to pay it and realise the loss if a crash happens then take that into consideration.

Personally though I'd be looking at either a 1650 super or 1660 super and comparing their price with the 1060 cards. They are much better cards with similar performance and should be better in newer games.
