Hi guys,

Got an Asus AC86u and running merlin firmware.

When opening a port I can see two ways of doing it in the menus.
1. Virtual server/port forwarding page (under WAN menu)
2. Inbound firewall rules (under Firewall menu)

I can't figure out what is the difference between the two, anyone know?

Thanks.

Go to WAN > Virtual Server/Port Forwarding, make sure to 'Enable Port Forwarding', input the following:

  • Rule Name (what you want to call it).
  • Source IP (if you want to limit access to a specific remote IP).
  • Port Range (the external port, or port range).
  • Local IP (the IP of the box running whatever you want to expose).
  • Local Port (the port the service is running on).
  • Protocol is either TCP, UDP or Both depending on the type of service.

After that tick the plus to add it and then click apply.

For obvious reasons you probably want static IP's for any boxes running services, you can do this either via DHCP or the box itself. You can also have a different external port to the internal one, for example running something externally on 8080 but internally on 80 etc.

Thanks, do you know what the inbound firewall rules page is for? Just wondered why it also exists.
