Electricity meter readings

Need some help with my meter readings. I moved into a rented flat in July last year and gave my meter readings when I signed up. I thought it strange at the time that the night reading was much higher then the day but they didn't question it at all and even said when I tried to give them the higher reading that this wasn't the day reading and the much lower one was what they expected going by the last readings.

For the last 6 months or so the day and night rate have been fairly close with the night rate always more by a 10-20 kWh each month. Again didn't think much of this as I'm out the flat between 6-6 everyday.

So 2 weeks ago I started mining on my 3080 when I wasn't using it, so pretty much from 10pm to say 6pm the next day. I expected the bill to go up and it has but the day rate has gone up maybe 30kHw and the night rate by 100kHw. This doesn't make sense to me at all, I'm mining 7 hours at night rate and 11 hours at day rate my night rate is meant to be midnight to 7am according to the meter. The meter has a sticker on it saying Rate1= Low 00:00-07:00, rate 1 is showing 17926 with rate 2 showing 10720. So its been like this way before I moved it, is this a **** up the electricity company? I'm not too worried about a bill adjustment when I plan to leave but I honestly can't work out what's up with the readings.

Was it not your muck up when you gave them reversed readings when you moved in? Either way, i'd expect your day rate to have increased by 100kWh and night rate by 30kWh - the point of an economy7 tariff is that your electricity is very cheap during 7 hours overnight, and then very expensive during the remainder of the day.

Depends on what's going on at night. If you're using Economy 7 properly, there's something going on at night (such as electricity being used to heat an immersion tank). That may use up more units at night, but those units will be cheaper. Bear in mind that compared to last July, you will use more electricity in winter for heating and lights.

I gave them the higher reading when they asked for day rate, they said this wasn’t the right reading and when I gave them the lower one they said that’s the right one. So they have been the wrong way round since we’ll before I moved in.

I haven’t changed anything from when I moved in. I’m only here for 12 months and I can do nothing about the meter and wasn’t worth moving provider since I had to change it back when I leave.

Heating and hot water are gas. I just checked again and rate 1 has moved and rate 2 has not. So if the 12-7 is correct then rate one is day rate despite the sign on the meter saying rate 1 is night rate.

Not going to bother correcting them, it’s their mess up and if they correct it then fine but it seems it have been this way since the meter was installed. Its rented and the landlord states I can’t do anything with the meter and I have to change the provided back to Scottish power if I do move. From speaking to Scottish power when I moved it in seems they have been the provider for a long time.

Well I’m even more confused now. Put on as much power as I can too see which one is day and night. Rate 1 has been moving since I 1st looked at 9pm which would suggest it is in fact day rate. Went down at 12:30 hoping to see rate 2 now moving but it was still rate 1. Checked the time on the meter and it’s an hour behind, so went down just now and rate 1 is still moving. So looks like 12-7 is not my night rate times anyway. Guess I’ll check again at 2:30 to see if it swaps over.

Just a thought but I moved in to a rented accommodation once where the crafty tenants had move the economy seven clock forward exactly 12 hours. Not once did the meter readers ever notice.

It's not always a 12-7, i think in the past we had a 1-8, although i can't remember if that was due to time changes.

well at 8:30am (7.30am going by the time on the meter) it was using rate 2. Going to check in a min to see if it’s still using that.

I’m off work this week so going to check it every hour one day to see what the hell it’s doing.

Can you change tarriffs/provider? You'll be paying more for daytime electricity (that you use all the time), and less for the nighttime electricity that you won't be using much of.

I can change but it’s not worth it. I’m planing to leave in July after my year is up. I hardly pay anything for energy, the total bill is under £40 normally.

My problem is the readings don’t seem right, the day reading should be higher then the night but is way off. I’m Justin’s to to take readings all day to see when it swaps over. Right now it’s using rate 2, the lower reading of the 2.
