Kia e-Niro 4+ vs Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus

Tell people you have a Kia and they'll be bored, tell them you have a Tesla and they'll be impressed.

All other things being equal, I'd get a Tesla.
People probably don't go out of their way to tell people they own a Kia, whereas owning a Tesla seems to be the automotive equivalent of being Vegan.

2. The M3 SR+ isn't specified very differently to the 'top model' Performance. I think it's missing heated rear seats. That's about the main difference, other than the dual-motor and battery.

All M3s are actually fitted with heated rear seats, they're just deactivated by default. Caused some stir when announced but I don't care, you can activate them for £300 and that's no different to having to decide on-purchase (but more flexibility).

I'm afraid you've got that totally the wrong way around from experience. I call my M3 a car. Everyone else calls it a Tesla (and I hate it). Their brand is crazy powerful, people who have no idea about cars know about Tesla and who Elon Musk is and if you drive past a school all the kids gawp. And it seems everyone that hasn't actually looked into buying one thinks they're at least double the price.

Truth be told I've only actually spoken to three Tesla drivers in person. They all mentioned their car at the earliest opportunity and with two it was THE topic of conversation, whether you showed any interest or not :p

My comment was tongue in cheek though :)

Out of the two I’d get the Tesla unless I really needed the hatch or could get a really good deal on the Nero/Kona (nearer to £30k or equivalent lease/PCP price).

The Kona and Nero are overpriced for what they are at RRP. When you consider the EV6 and Ionic 5 are just around the corner for not much more money and are substantially better cars.

If they are considering a Nero, why not an I.D.4? They are in the same ball park price wise.

The problem is there will be something significantly better and/or cheaper 'just around the corner' for the next 5 years or more, such is the rate at which the market is trying to get a foothold on the shift to EVs.

The Ionic 5 and EV6 will effectively obsolete the Nero at its current price is out in 5-6 months not 5 years. It’s already been announced and orderers are being taken soon.

Once the new cars land the Nero will need a substantial price cut to remain viable. That’s why I said only consider is if you can get a really good deal on one.

They’re £10K under the Ioniq 5/EV6 model for model after the price cuts last week. You can now get a 64kWh Kona for £32500 after the grant.

I hadn’t realised they have already had a price cut. That certainly makes them more palatable, I’d say they could still do with a little more trimming on the price but you might be able to get that from a dealer.

e-Niro can pass for a "normal" but in a Tesla you need a fairly thick skin as you'll get good and bad attention. Maybe your friend may not want that sort of attention in a family car.

On CarWow (including the £2500 grant) they’re saying average saving of £4750 on a Kona and £4000 on an eNiro. So the discount from the dealer is £2000-ish so you’d actually pay ££30-31K for the Kona, on the road.

I just picked up a new M3 SR+, the reputational quality of Tesla is outdated. Their initial Model3 2017/2018 for sure had some early manufacturing issues, but following closely on various forums and subreddits shows that is behind them. A sample of just 1 (mine) isn't good enough to prove that for sure, but I can say all the doors, trim etc. is spot on for me.

With regards to the difference, the minimalist luxury design of the Tesla's is a step far above anything you'll get from Kia/Hyundai. I find the interior better than BMW, Mercedes, Audi etc. But that will be a personal preference, do you like tons of buttons and switches or minimalism.

I'm not a fan of minimalism. I prefer physical buttons over a touchscreen, how to you use muscle memory on a touch screen?

I won't go as far as tons of buttons but at least a couple to set wiper speed wouldn't be amiss

I am actually impressed with the touchscreen while driving (even on terrible LA freeways/highways!). I don't have an issue getting to the few controls I need while driving, mostly it's switching music or adjusting the cabin temperature.

I was worried about that one! Turns out, you can tap the button on the left stalk to make the wipers go once, this also brings up the settings on the touchscreen to adjust speed (if you want to override the automatic). The automatic wipers worked flawlessly for me in a brief piece of rain I experienced.

The touchscreen interface only bugged me once. When I was setting up my driving position. But that was the once. After that, I found the voice control pretty good for most things. On the Hyundai, it definitely is easier to adjust the temperature and higi volume but other than that I don't press the buttons much.

I'm never going to be there I'm afraid. I just think it is borderline dangerous. I had this gripe when I got my XF in 2015 and you had to press a physical button to then bring up a touch screen interaction to put the heated seats on. Poor design IMO. I know it is where the market is heading but I don't think it is better at all. What if it is cold and I'm wearing gloves

You just say 'Windscreen wipers speed one/two' and they turn on. Or 'Windscreen wipers intermittent' and they come on. The voice recognition is excellent.

I'm normally on work calls whilst driving long distance, or the little one is asleep in the back. Feels like a compromise I shouldn't have to make but I appreciate there are work arounds.
