Wondering what GPU I can upgrade to to play some older games (skyrim etc) plus some more modern ones? Currently has a GT 640 GPU which is woefully inadequate. All wrapped in a Cooler Master Elite case but no idea on quality of the PSU either.

Speccy specs here:

A gtx 970 would be a good balance I would have thought, overclocking the cpu would benefit it quite a bit as the older chips don't boost automatically as close to the limits like the newer ones do

I can see from the case window it has an Akasa CPU cooler. Nothing special I guess. I used to have a 3570k before and i never did manage to OC that either. Thanks for tip on the GPU

No problem, also check the speed the ram is capable of running at, the DDR3 from around when that CPU was out usually ran at around 1333-1600Mhz which could potentially increase performance

802 MHz at dual channel is 1604mhz so should be fine.

I had a 3570k and tbh any decent graphics card will be fine, mine ran on a gtx 780 and a gtx 1060 fine but I think a 1070 /1080 or even a 2060 would be great.

you may be cpu limited in a lot of newer games but that cpu overclocked to 4.2 or 4.4ghz would do fine.

The one game I struggled with was cod warzone other than that I had no real problems at 1920x1200 resolution.

I just fired up vanilla skyrim and can play it on high at 1920 x 1080 on the current kit. That'll do for now until I can find a decent 2nd hand gpu.

I have no idea how to over clock ram and cpu so I'll do some homework later.

My old man has a stock 3570k with a 4gb RX 480 and Cyberpunk is surprisingly playable at 1080p. 40+ fps on medium settings

Your issue is not what card you should buy, but the fact that all cards are hard to find and expensive
