Can anyone help with how to adjust the fill level on this old toilet? It appears to be filling too much resulting in overflow:

Adjusted it and it fills less but there is still water dripping in (which means it will eventually overflow) so this must be the original problem.

Is this a sticking float valve? Can these still be obtained?

It will be the washer that has deteriorated, you can pick up a replacement from most diy stores. Just look up how to replace it, probably be a 10 minute job.

90% of the time - look at the main washer, and it will be covered with scurvy equivalents, slippery when wet. Clean and or replace it.

I would personally just replace the whole fill valve rather than just the washer inside it.

When they are old they are caked in scale, plastic goes brittle and can just fall to bits when you take them apart. For the price of a fully refreshed valve that will last another decade it’s just not worth the potential hassle of trying to do the o-ring on its own.

I found out the hard way, when dealing with plumbing, don't overtighten stuff, the plastic threads and flimsy washers are easily damaged if you're used to giving everything one ugga dugga on an impact wrench.

Did you get a 1/2" fibre washer as well, assuming you've got a tap connector or service valve on the other side. Unless it's a push-fit fitting with a rubber washer the fibre one will need replacing.
Edit: Also offer it up and check it will fit in your cistern with the float attached before you try to do anything.

TBH, if you're going to replace the ballcock, you're better off going for something like a modern float valve. Faster, quieter, more easily adjusted. Costs a few pounds more, but just works better.

Absolutely this.

Why would you even buy one of the older fill valves. I replaced not even an old one in our ensuite a few weeks ago as the float didn't shut the water off so it overflowed.

The new one is amazingly quiet to the point that unless you're right next to it, you can't even hear it flush.

Edit: Just looking at your link and this is the exact one that I used to replace the old one with.
