I am trying to replace a fence post but just cannot seem to get it to move. I cant really dig it out because of the patios. There isnt anything to get a chain on to pull it out. I have hammered a bar in as far as I can all the way around it and there is no concrete keeping it in. I just cant really dig deep enough because of the patios.

The only idea I have left is to try and dig a trench alongside it (upwards in these pics) and try and tip it out. Its on full view of their patio doors tho so I am not too keen on spending more time failing with an audience.

Anyone got any ideas? I am over 1ft down around it so should have less than 1ft to go but it still will not budge.

Just looking for more ideas before I go out and make a fool of myself some more :)

extend the trench along the fenceline, dig enough down so you can maybe swing a lump hammer at it and see if you can get a bit of a wobble going :D

Work harder, I'm afraid it's as simple and at times, as mind numbing as that :p

I did two last year. I now own an SDS which would have made super light work of it.

Unfortunately there is no magic solution.

Drill a really chunky screw or two into it, or through a piece of wood and then into it, then strap that to a car jack and Jack it out of the ground

Thats probably going to be the way. Will just have to wait until next door arent in so I am not being watched!

Have just seen someone else mention loosening the area up with pressure washer... Thats an option.

I'd be embarrassed to get too creative however I had equal embarrassment when I was on it for two days - ended up buying an 18inch chisel and a bigger sledgehammer. If you have a couple of reasons justify yourself an SDS.

You could talk to the neighbours and just dig from there side.... Unless you don't get along, in which case say you need to do the above otherwise there's no fence going back up :p

Alternatively take up a slab or two

Can you not fill that in and place a post a bit further apart so you haven't got to dig it out, otherwise I would look to dig down to the concrete and chisel it out with an SDS, you pull that out with a chain or something and it could be a wide bit of concrete holding it in that pulls up both your patios.

How to do it with a complete post:

Clearly a different process with a stump, but if it's reasonably solid, not too rotten, you should be able to rig something
