Can I run 2 internet providers in the same house?

Afternoon all, apologies if this comes across as dense or in the wrong place; I'm not massively hot on technology.

I currently have a Sky router, with Sky Q, and I'm having to move out of this accommodation and back in with my parents at the end of the week. They currently have BT set up at their house.

Where do I stand with this? Would I be able to bring my Sky router and plug it in somewhere and have 2 networks from the same property?

If not, what are my options? If anybody could help me out that would be fantastic. Don't want to continue paying £70 a month for Sky Q that I cannot use, similarly I don't believe there's even a second place to plug another router in at my parents.

Thanks.

You'd need another line into your folks house to have 2 ISP's running at the same time. If cable is available in their area you could look at that or alternative methods such as mobile, Satellite broadband etc but they have their downsides.

Unless you want to throw money around, best option would be to cancel one of the contracts, BT or Sky, although I'm guessing you'll be liable for a early termination fee.

Thanks for your reply. It sounds stupid, but how do I get another line to have a second ISP? I haven't checked but I'm sure I'll be liable for early termination, I only signed up for Sky 3 months ago! (Obviously wasn't aware I'd be moving back..)

I run two ISPs, I have Virgin Media 660mbit as the primary line for all the WiFi devices, my son's PC etc and then a dedicated 72mbit Sky FTTC line (with WiFi disabled) for my PC. This means there is no contention for gaming etc.
Just as well really as Virgin goes down from time to time, the second line provides some redundancy which helps when working from home etc.

If your parents are with BT then the best option would be to install a new phone line, the ISP should be able to arrange this or you can go direct via BT.

You'll need to order one from BT, it won't be cheap I don't think. There will probably be a fee for migrating your Sky account over too . Compare that total against the SKY ETF.

...not for circa two decades. Op would need to contact Sky to move his services, insist he needs a new line at the property and make a token £20 charge, Openreach then do the install, nothing to do with BT and not expensive.

It might be easier to get a 4G broadband package. Doesn't require any line (obviously) and you can just pick up the box and take it with you.

Does depend a lot on the 4G speeds in your areas though. I'm able to get ~130mbps via 4G where I am, compared to ~20 from the BT FTTC.

There’s a very real chance Sky will try and take over your parents line if the advisor does it wrong. Make sure you tell Sky you want a new line, not a takeover. Likely more than once as a takeover is the default option. Should your parents receive a letter advising them their line is being taken over then it’s been done wrong!

I have heard that so many times with sky. Absolute shambles when that happens.

Sadly this - there also doesn't seem to be nearly enough checks and balances within BT and/or OR as appropriate to stop it happening when some random person gets the details wrong!

I've had to go heavy, which is really not something I like doing, at executive level to get it resolved satisfactorily before due to the potential issues it can cause in loss of number, service, etc.

I was thinking of getting another line installed for use with Zen i can stick a server on it with a static ip £140 for the line and i think £34 a month

What would you be running? If it's a web server you can get away with it on a main line if it's a light website or where you thinking about something like a gaming server or something?
I am with BT at the moment, I could change isp I guess, but i was thinking webserver, small forum and a Azuracast server streaming some music, its a pipe dream,
We are doing all those things at the moment via an shared hosting and an un-managed vps
