Resident Evil 8 performance

does anyone else have problems with alt-tabbing?

practically, i get 60 fps+ at 4k (supersampled with 2x scale) with rt. once i alt-tab, game starts to tap into shared memory pool and it never lets it go, causing huge performance drops

as i've shown in the video, even dropping to 540p (1080p*0.5) does not make the game run beyond 50+ fps because game insistently uses shared memory

can anyone else try the same and report similar incident? or is it specific to my system?

Press Windows + D and then Alt + Tab to the window you want

but no, Alt Tab does not reduce game performance when I go back to the game

then there's something seriously wrecked with my system or it happens with 8 gb vram cards in particular

i now realized i forgot the post the video sorry

Yeah that's really weird. I'll try doing alt tab again soon to double check but when I was making this thread I was doing a lot of alt tabbing to post results and didn't notice any drops

yeah but i see you have a 24 gb gpu  that might play a role

weird , if it was a general spread issue i guess more people would've noticed it. or people dont push 4k + rt with 3070 at all

but it's clearly capable, i'm getting practically 60+ fps as long as i don't alt-tab. weird tbh

Maybe it goes over 8Gb once you alt-tab and then never go below again. It is the only explanation a memory cap will kill your fps.

nooo
vram is there... game refuses to re-use it on "my" system for some reason

maybe a bug with driver, or a bug related to windows 10 updates... or maybe specific issue to this game because i dont experience similar behaviour on other titles

well i decided to install the latest nvidia driver. here's hoping it fixes the problem

A year?

By then Nvidia 4000 series GPUs will have moved on Ray Tracing performance even more.
AMD will also have RDNA3 out next year and will have their own DLSS competitor out this year.
What many seem to be ignoring is that AMD's first gen RT performance is actually a bit better than Nvidia's first gen RT and that is without any Tensor cores.

checked again, no performance change at all from alt tabing in and out of the game

AMD's first gen RT cards are more powerful in general so this is to be expected. It means they can brute force their way past Nvidia's 20 series RT performance
Although to be fair, the 2080 Super and TI are still ahead in RT performance. It's only the 2080 and below that AMD can currently match but even they can simply use DLSS to overtake again.

AMD really needs their DLSS tech, it's a shame it's taking them so long. Competition means better pricing (although I guess not in this environment)

AMD cards seem like they'll be fine with 'light touch' RT, it's when it's used more heavily that it will run into problems (and you can be sure Nvidia will do this on their sponsored games even to the detriment of their own cards performance, they have form for it!)

Games will primarily be designed for consoles, remember that. Of course there will be money changing hands to see certain technologies in games, but it won't be in the majority.

^^

Yup have to agree with that, disappointing overall especially on the graphics front.

Problem is that has been said ever since amd got into the consoles and were're still waiting to see the benefits of this.... Assassin's creed, godfall and dirt being the main games where they have a decent lead over Nvidia.

5950X + 3090 + 32GB of RAM.

I've a sneaking suspicion you're not going to be able to replicate his issues tbh. lol
