Using Vivaldi browser [my default], download the app in question from Softpedia.
Go to the Downloads main folder, tap on the app and it brings up an option to install it via Vivaldi. You first need to give the system permission to do so.
I haven't gone ahead yet, but it seems like this is the way it can work for me. Anyone tried anything different?
Yes, that's pretty much how you do it. Alternatively, download with whatever browser you prefer, and then use a file manager app to navigate to the downloads folder.
Make sure to disable auto updates for that specific app in the Play store too.
Is this better than Softpedia? Apparently Softpedia files are the originals, is the same the case for APKMirror? Thanks for the confirmation on the method.

OK great, thanks. I've noticed they've also got their own app for installing packages. It's in development so not sure if it's worth installing but it's there on the Play Store for download.
EDIT: Looks like I'm going to have to go with Softpedia since it was the Spotify app I was after, and they have had all their old versions removed from APKmirror.
EDIT2: it works! Old Spotify app is installed. It's faster and works better than the latest [Spotify connect is broken - doesn't work at all - with the latest, it works on this one].
