Hey all.

I am struggling to run my CNC machine and a couple of 3d printers + some programming on a useless old HP laptop.

I am thinking of a bare-bones build of a motherboard, PSU etc all mounted in a frame that I can design here... I don't really need a case (although you can grab one for super cheap).

In these tight cash times (Thanks Covid), I can't go mad. Any advice for a decent mohterboard + processor + memory + CPU bundle that is maybe <£250/300?

I have a monitor, HD, 750W PSU, Network wireless card and don't need sound.

There is this bundle?

Advice gratefully received, as I have been out of the PC building loop for quite a while

you dont say you have a graphics card so this is if you have something to use.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £324.47 (includes shipping: £10.50)

You can get the ryzen 5 2600 for £145 from otherwhere saving £21.

|This is intel with intergrated gpu

both will outperform that bundle you linked to.

Might sound crazy but a Pi 3b+/4 and octoprint might be all you want for all the printers.

Personally I would get on ebay and buy a used Dell/HP/Lenovo small form factor PC. For £300 you can get a complete system with at least an i5, 8GB ram and an SSD in a neat little package that will be quiet and reliable.

Thanks all.
All my slicing and CAD software is Windows, so a Pi 3b+/4 isn't really an option. Plus I program C etc on the same PC.

Wow... that is a cheap case!

My problem buying second hand is you have no idea what it's like. I looked about locally on Facebook Marketplace, but they are pretty low spec.
Somehow, I totally forgot about the graphics card... ha. I have a £299 HP laptop that I currently use and its APPALLINGLY slow. No matter what I do with it, it just simply crawls.

I will continue my research!

OK. Just a quick play:

Assuming I don't use my old drives, PSU etc...

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £496.02 (includes shipping: £11.10)

Any blatantly obvious errors?

The cheapo DVD drive is because I still have some old software on disc.
Will I need a CPU cooler? I do believe I have a spare decent new one.

If you're planning to run without a GPU then you will want the non F version of the CPU, also I'm not sure if that motherboard will support the CPU without a bios update however this one will.

So what's the best option to leave it open to maybe add a graphics card later, but start with the onboard graphics?
I am thinking for when I get my head properly around CAD work. I might need/want a better graphics card.

Thank you for all the advice

I went off OC description and it says

- Onboard Graphics: YES Intel UHD Graphics 750

under the F version.
It's probably a miss print as the first line of the product description says "11th Gen Intel® Core™ i5-11400F desktop processor without processor graphics"

I'd second that - HP elitedesk sff would be great. Bonus would be that even if it fails in 5 years time you'll still be able to get hold of the same machine and swap the hard drive over and be back up and running.

That 600W PSU will probably be fine for the type of discrete GPU you might add at a later stage. You’re not likely to ever use a RTX 3080 for example.

Take a look at Intel NUCs.

Add RAM and SSD as required.

However, you indicate that this is going to be in a workshop so you should browse https://www.fanlesstech.com/ for ideas.
