Just take the side plate off and loosen the fan screws ? Hm

Yeah and also check the fan holes that align with two plastic pins are not touching.

Here is a picture of them:

You’ll see that one of the locating holes is larger than the other, that’s the one to focus on.

Mine was initially making quite a bit of contact but I centred the hole so the space was even and barely touching the plastic locating pin.

Here is a video that demonstrates perfectly the resonance as he puts the fan back down and the fan shell makes contact with the pins at around 13 seconds…

As he raises the fan the noise reduces, that’s the theory behind using rubber o-rings as it raises the fan and dampens vibrations. But in my case I found the tightness of the screws effected the resonance too!

What is concerning in this case is that the engineer said no fault found

From their point of view it likely isn’t a fault as it doesn’t affect the functionality of the console in any way.

It’s also difficult as noise is subjective, people have different seating distances, different tolerance levels and most importantly different hearing.

The pitch of the ufo sound was crazy to me. Far more annoying than the coil whine which just reminds me of how my Plasma tv used to buzz on bright scenes lol. But anyone I tried to show the sound to said they couldn’t hear anything.

Not everyone can hear certain frequencies though…

After my adjustment it’s far better. I can still hear the sound but this time it’s only if I put my ear right next to the console. Before I could hear it 8 feet away. Especially at night when the console was downloading or something in rest mode as the fan still spins.

Technically it spins, and removing air likely at the same rate and the system boots up and functions. Their working environment may also have lots of background noise and this would not register.

If you bought a new car and it made a squeaking sound when you used the aircon would you just live with it, still working but an added squeak?

It went to the service centre with a noise fault so you would assume they would not look for such a fault in a noisy environment

That's not the same thing at all. If i am going to take a stand on the Sony's perspective.

1 - perception of noise level
2 - the environment of the test is different to your home. And the car, you would be sitting inside, and there is only 1 place you can sit therefore the variable is practically the same for both.
3 - It's not a fault, the PS5 works on all the metric in their tests. a fan that makes 2db louder than another is not a fault. It still play games just fan. It doesn't crash, it's not overheating. All the metric, and they would have them, it passes all their tests and tolerances. If they have a noise level, it passes that too. It might not be to your liking but it has not failed.

As for "It went to the service centre with a noise fault so you would assume they would not look for such a fault in a noisy environment"

You think they will build a sound proof room for this? or do you think they have a room for every fault.

Like a dark room to test the brightness of the LED, a zero noise room for fan noise. Or would you think it's just your run of the mill electronic workshop with people around, perhaps even a background radio playing?

Look, I am not saying that fan isn't making a noise, but it also doesn't cross the line of being faulty to me, and not to them either.

I can get why some people just cant be bothered with it. Far too much hassle to get something.

I am not fussed, honestly I don't even want it right now because there is no games i like on the PS5 currently but merely planning ahead as I like to have one before Christmas this year, with the shortage of stock doesn't look like it will get better in 2021 I think the next 3 months will be the lowest point in demand until it ramps up again as we approach Christmas. At the moment i am just fighting against gamers. Come Christmas i would be competing against parents and and people buying them as gifts.

If you don't want one right now, don't buy one. You'd just running down the warranty on something you're apparently not going to use.

He wants one this year though so makes sense to get one ASAP IMO as no guarantee he could get one later in the year either. Good point though on the warranty.

That's why I am not really chasing it, if i happen to stumble across one, like walking into John Lewis on a Saturday Afternoon...then i will. Not going to stay up at 4am checking Twitter and Discord channel for it.

Not bothered about warranty, i'll take my chances.

Edit - Erm...less than a minute wait but i just realise i don't have my wallet on me. LOL

I am hoping they take Paypal...

Edit again - SOLD OUT!!!! I even had the message it's my turn and being redirected to the website lol

Finally nabbed one this morning from Game website. Had to wait in a queue for almost an hour and I had to buy a bundle with another controller, which isn't a big deal.
Won't get it until next week but at least I can stop looking. Eldest daughter will be happy, she'll be getting my PS4 Pro to replace her jet engine ps4 release model.

Just got the email from PlayStation support regarding the fan noise and the YouTube video I posted.

Thank you for taking the time to send the video in this matter. This has been fully reviewed for you and we are happy to advise the console appears to show normal operation.

Gonna call them up not happy.

Been playing Spiderman today and the fans sound so wrong.

Anyone with an LG CX or other OLED played RE7? On the settings for HDR you are told to move the slider until both white rectangles blend in but I can't get it to do that.

Edit nvm. For some reason my console calibration was way out.
