I'm considering one now I have a little extra budget and I've seen three I really like:

This one: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202105072322520 is relatively local, low mileage and is a lovely dark blue too. Is there anything I should look out for due to the low mileage?

There's also this one: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202105202861927 which looks spectacular to my eyes but has a much higher mileage, even more than my 2012 Focus has and I worry about the 20" wheels absolutely ruining the ride comfort and decent tyres appear to be £150 each. The roads here aren't great and have speed bumps a plenty.

Then there's also this one: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202102149047546 which seems much better value but is, of course, a private sale. Again much higher mileage than the first which is incredibly low for it's age.

Is there anything I should know about these? I believe the 420i and 428i share the same 2.0 twin power turbo just in different states of tune? Are these engines generally reliable compared to the N54 in the x35i models of comparable age?

The second one at SCS, my mate just bought (yesterday) the 2014 428i Gran Coupe they had in. They seemed to be a decent bunch, and the car was as described and in great condition!

The only things I’d be ensuring are Pro Nav, and a mileage under 60,000 so it’ll be eligible for the lower rate BMW extended warranty!

Thanks. The one at SCS has more than 60,000 miles so no lower rate warranty.

Pro nav for me personally was a must.

Not an expert but the first is a Sport, the 2nd an M Sport, the last an SE so unless it doesn't matter to you you need to decide which you prefer?

are you set on manual ? auto is a strong consideration for me, unless it represents a reliability/maintenance issue.
also, on the pro nav discourse, what is the premium like, compared to an all singing, aftermarket AA display

I had a pre LCI F32 428i and currently have a LCI F36 440i

F36 LCI came out in mid 2017, can easily be identified by the LED tail lamp cluster Vs the incandescent bulb tail lamp cluster of the pre-LCI. Much better looking.
Damping also much improved in LCI versions.

Also in 2016 the interior was slightly changed (white led centre console Vs orange, and the cup holder design...both again much improved). Pre 2015 had NBT headunits Vs NBT Evo in later versions. LCI have idrive 6

Would definitely suggest opting for an LCI msport specced version. As you say already pretty well equipped. Just do note that reversing camera wasn't part of the standard options in pre LCI until slightly later.

As for additional options... definitely dont go without the msport plus package. Other thing I would consider essential is the adaptive LED headlights as these are brighter than the standard LEDs.
(I also have adaptive suspension on mine too)

Full leather interior smartens up the interior, but rarely specced, so hard to find on the second hand market.
Heated steering wheel is also nice to have. But again rarely specced.

MPPSK is a £1500 option (increases hp by 30/torque by 50 and a straight downpipe).

Pro nav, M Sport and LED/Xenon headlamps would be a must for me

Edit: they’re not twin turbo, they’re twin scroll turbos :)

Single turbo with twin stages.

Usefully if you get an M Sport you get pro nav as standard and I'm fairly sure all 4 series have xenon and later ones LED as standard.

My friend's 2014 428i Gran Coupe M Sport has pathetic nav. Does have Xenons though.

Alas, he was more bothered about it being Estoril than having kit.

Good spot, it appears to have been an MY16 onwards change which added Media Package Professional as standard to the M Sport and the Luxury. Presumably the point at which 428i and 435i became 430i and 440i.

I think the AUC 420i is likely to be the one. I still really like the lighter blue on 20’s with all the external M Performance goodies but the mileage means it’s more expensive to warranty and the local one, although a near 90 minute drive away, comes with much lower mileage and the BMW 12 month warranty too.

Where’s local to you? Give me a shout if you see anything on the south coast - happy to check it out and do some pictures :)

Wouldnt worry about pro nav, its far from essential, if its got it great otherwise not worth crying over. Unless you are doing mega miles.

Do the number of miles you are doing somehow make the small screen infotainment/entrynav change appearance? The small screen is awful, it looks out of place and makes the iDrive system less useful (no split screen for a start).

Personally I'd want the Auto (well sport auto, but normal would do) gearbox as well.

Had it for three years in 340i and had no issues with it at all. Yeah pro is better but not worth worrying about. I might worry about it if I did thousands of miles a month.
