I need to purchase a car to tide me over for about 18 months.

Key requirements, reliability, other than servicing it I don't want any unexpected bills.

I would be happy with either a hatchback or saloon.

Not worried about any release value as I will more than likely give the car to my daughter.

How many miles will you be doing? Will you be looking at petrol or diesel?

I think petrol but i am happy to be persuaded otherwise. As for miles, not a great deal, it will be used for socialising. I walk to work when I have to go in.

At this price point and that a petrol is the best choice I would certainly go for something Japanese. Honda Civic or Jazz, Toyota Auris or Corolla, Mazda 2 or 3? If you don’t mind something drink a bit more fuel, you could always get an IS250?

Is your daughter learning to drive or has she already passed? Just wondering if she will be learning in it and insurance etc for when you give it to her.

Focus , focus , Focus

looking at mine on AT, you can get one for 2K
2009 - 2011 years
you might even get a 2011 mk3 for 3 and half

She is about to start learning.

Well if your daughter is learning to drive ignore the suggestion of the IS250.

A Focus isn’t a bad idea, my wife ran one for 3 years, apart from servicing and tyres it was a very good car. I found it really boring to drive, but she loved it.

mine is now 7 years old, never had 1 problem with it, such a good car

Yaris all day long :p The 2010 onwards petrols are Euro 4, so largely clean air zone compliant in many cities.

Even though it's a warm hatch rather then a hot hatch you may find it expensive to insure for a new driver.
