Hi,

I will be moving into a new house soon, one thing I am keen on is getting a video doorbell

The house already has a standard wired doorbell

I want to installation to be as clean as possible

- I was originally looking at the Eufy wired doorbell, but I am seeing conflicting reports, that within the UK you need to plug in an extra mains plug. Is this correct? If so, this is a no-go for me

- Then, I started looking at the Ring doorbells. They have a £25 a year fee, which is not ideal, but not the end of the world either. It seems that Ring have a thousand models... are any of the ring models 100% compatible with the UK wiring? (meaning that I don't have to plug in an extra mains plug..)

Thanks

Why is it a no go for plugging it in? They need power, to record with the camera built into it...

Get power run to the front over hang / porch, or drill through where the existing wired door bell is and plug it in near the front door (if there is one)

Because there is no mains plug anywhere near the front door

I ideally want something that gets 'powered' using the pre-existing doorbell wiring that's already there

You can get the wired version of it:

Just need to make sure the existing circuit is powered correctly as the Ring needs a stepped down circuit.

Your Video Doorbell Wired is designed to replace an existing doorbell button and gets its power from the doorbell system. Your Ring Doorbell is compatible only with existing doorbell systems that provide low voltage 8-24VAC. If your existing doorbell system is volt-free at the doorbell or does not include a step down transformer to lower the voltage to 8-24VACthen your system is not compatible with your Ring doorbell, and will need to be replaced with a Ring DIN Rail Transformer (2nd gen) by a qualified electrician.

If the existing circuit is not powered correctly, does this involve adding a transformer to the circuit box? (which is okay, I don't mind this since its out of the way)

It's confusing because on that link there's a product called "Video Doorbell Wired with Plug-In Adapter"...which is what put me off the Eufy

I’ve just been trying to work this out for my house but ours has a transformer so I believe it’s just a matter of connecting the jumper in the chime and then replacing the doorbell.

If you haven’t already got a transformer then I guess you would either install a compatible one or the Ring transformer. I’m not an electrician so not entirely certain on this though.

The plug in adapter I think is just a plug. If you have the stepped down powered doorbell circuit then you wouldn’t need the plug.

Hope that helps a little.

Yeah it does help, thanks!

Have a look at the Netatmo doorbell. It runs off normal EU 8V doorbell transformers and you should be able to use the existing chime (ding dong) and wiring. It’s a pretty easy install of you already have a standard mains powered doorbell which all run at 8V (normally via built in transformer or less commonly - wired back to the consumer unit where the transformer is)

Ring, nest et al all use higher voltages and require a change of transformer.

Pretty sure my eufy cam just needs wiring to doorbell wire. Infact it actually runs on a battery anyway. Ours is wireless

I had the Ring video doorbell 2 on my old house, which connected up to the wires that were already in place and seemed fine.

If I wanted the pro though it needed more power and that would have meant more changes to the wiring, so I settled on the 2 instead as I could self-install it.

Wow, this Netatmo might be the best of all my requirements:

- Fully compatible with UK wiring
- No subscription fees (nice to have)
- Homekit integration (nice to have)

Yup, it’s a little more expensive but no subs so you’ll spend less overall.

The video is stored on a micro SD on device but it can offload to an FTP as well.

If you did need to change the transformer, it's super easy. I fit mine in the old chime housing on the wall. No extra wiring required.
