hi guys,

i already know about te gpu prices but was wondering if anyone have any recommendation on a gpu for my build please?

my set up is:

Mainboard: ASRock b560 steel legend atx
Processor: Intel i5 11500
Memory: Crucial Ballistix 3600Mhz 16GB (2x8GB) RGB Gaming Memory Black
GPU 1: nVidia GeForce GTX 480
Power: Seasonic Focus GX-650 650W 80+ Gold Modular Power Supply
Case: Phanteks ethoo pro m tempered glass
Hard Disk: Seagate 1TB
ssd: 256gb
hard disk: 2tb

my gtx is too old and uses loads of power. i was thinking either gtx 970 or 1050 or 1080.

many thanks guys

1050 is not really worth it, though true the power draw is much lower. The 1080 is in a completely different league performance wise (to the 480, or the 970), but obviously the price will be too.

With your CPU, you have a lot of headway. Its neck and neck with my own 9600k. Im on a 2060 and Ive never had any bottlenecking issues.

With the current situation, I would choose the 970. Ive seen them on second hand markets for around 120 pounds, you might be able to find one at that price too if youre lucky. Buying anything more beefier right now is a bad idea as they have RIDICULOUS prices. Saw a 1080 for 440 pounds. Truly insane. (120 for a 970 is high too, but still not insane).

I would get a 970, stick with it until this GPU shortage blows over, and then buy yourself a nice 1080 or 2060 at rrp. The 970 is still decent for 1080p gaming. Check out some FPS vids online, youll get medium - high setting 60fps on a lot of games.

Good luck

many thanks guys

@Ivs what do you mean i have a lot of headway on my cpu? is that a good thing?

yeah so far for 1080 they are roughly 450-500 and 970 is average at 200.

Yeah, having a lot of headway is a very good thing. It means you wont bottleneck/choke your graphics card and get slower performance. You want to have your CPU and GPU in the same performance tier otherwise its pointless and you'll be as fast as your weakest component.

I tried my brother's 3070 with my 9600k and couldnt detect any bottlenecking, so you can upgrade your GPU quite a bit without worrying about bottlenecking.

200 for a 970. Wow.

Either way, try to get a 970 for as cheap as you can and stick with it for a while. GPU prices are mental

thank you

glad to hear that my cpu is good.

if i cant find a cheap enough gpu, is it safe to keep using my gtx 480 for now?

Safe?

Of course. Just check your temps with MSI Afterburner or a similar monitoring software. I imagine your GPU being a 400 series is always at 100% usage so it might get quite hot. Anything under 70C is good. Just make sure theres plenty of airflow to your PC. Plenty of tips on that on YT.

Good luck. And dont worry. Prices will comes down eventually

I wouldnt waste your money on a 970

I know your paying more but even if gpu prices drop that £200 is lost

so work on the assumption you are paying £200 more instead of wasting your time on a second hand card that could die in days

200 would be too high. But if you snap one which is 120/130, it would be worth it to use it for a few months until prices go back to normal and then sell off for 70/80 pounds. This is all assuming you will defo be using your PC for the next year or so.

Prices will go back to normal, only factor which is unknown is time

970's were going for £75 second hand before all this woohaa I nearly bought one for an Alienware I was modding/updating but in the end went for a new b grade 1060 6gb which cost me £135. How much are they now??!!

Agreed 970 brand new was cheaper than that when the 1080 was out never mind 30 series…
